“Newly renovated rooms are excellent!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

Stayed in this hotel for 3 days on business. Very good accommodation. Got a newly renovated room and it was very good. Housekeeping was a little suspect, but surviveable. Fridge in room and proximity to shopping areas and restaurants was excellent bonus. Breakfast in lobby restaurant was good; good variety and good quality.

“FIRST RATE HOTEL”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

I disagree with all the negative reviews on this one. I had a great stay. We barely opened our car door and the porter was right there. The customer service was superb (I made multiple requests) and the ambiance is fantastic. Though I did see evidence of construction going on, I see it as a good thing that their giving the place a face lift. I stayed in a renovated room and it was beautiful. The beds and linens were heavenly. The rooms are larger than you get anywhere and the price is great. There was place for my kids to run around and the staff was so friendly to them. I suggest you take my advice and check this place out!

Room Tip: Request a renovated room.

“Won't Stay Here Again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

This was by far one of the oddest hotel experiences I have ever had. I was in Stamford on business and the hotel looked okay on-line but in person, I thought it really needed a LOT of improvement. This property is in the process of becoming a Crown Plaza and in my opinion, they should close it until it is completely renovated. As is, it is in part dreadfully shabby and dirty and in part clean and nice. Unfortunately, it is not a smooth division. Half the building is covered in scaffolding and plastic. The carpet leading into the building is truly filthy and there were a very interesting group of people hanging around the front of the building talking on their cell phones and smoking. I later learned that this hotel is where the guests of the Maury Povich show stay.

The furniture in the lobby is old, mismatched and very stained. The first room I was given was in very bad repair. The carpet was very stained, the couch had a tear in it and the stuffing was poking out and the coffee table was so water-warped that you could not place a glass on it or it would topple over. The bedspread was so dirty that I was afraid to sit on the bed. I called the front desk and asked if there were any renovated rooms and happily, I was moved to one of them.

The renovated room was very nice and very clean. Unfortunately, they were doing construction in the surrounding area and so there was lots of noise and they took up the carpet in front of my room and did not replace it while I was there.

The first night I was there, I called for room service. I let the phone ring about 40 times and then called the fornt desk. They said that they would contact room service and room service would call me back. No one ever called. I called room service about 45 minutes later and some one finally answered. The food is okay, nothing special. The room service staff and waiters at breakfast were all very nice and professional, though.

I also asked for a wake-up call for 6:00 a.m. the next morning. The wake-up call never came.

Bottom line - I think this will be a nice hotel someday, but not today.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a renovated room.

“Wait for the renovation/rebranding”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

I guess the cracked glass in the revolving door should have been a warning. When we reached our room the hammering above our heads was deafening. Yes, we were told, the hotel is being renovated, and workers are active 7AM - 7PM. Then we looked at the room. Filth on the carpet, broken drawers. We went back to Reception and demanded better. They tried - even checked two rooms first on our behalf. Because we were there with a wedding party, we decided not to move elsewhere, so tolerated the smashed wall and electricity outlet, the towel rail hanging off the wall, etc. We requested, and got, free parking and free breakfast. The breakfast was the best part: although no one else was apparently eating there (surprise!), and the "continental" buffet was minimal, and you had to help yourself to coffee in paper cups, we demanded a cooked breakfast and the chef produced a magnificent fluffy omelet with home fries and fruit.
What was once a Sheraton has clearly been trashed by vandals and is being remodeled into a Holiday Inn Express (100 rooms) and Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza (150 rooms). Clearly the new owners need to make money while this happens, so are continuing to operate the place, spending much time responding to complaints and asking for guests' forbearance. The message is simple: don't go near this hotel until it is reopened as a Crowne Plaza/HI Express.

“Not ready for prime time”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

The Stamford Plaza is in the process of becoming a Crowne Plaza property (scheduled to occur after the first of the year) and undergoing some renovations in connection with the changeover. I'd highly recommend waiting until the new regime takes over. We checked into a room that was newly renovated (it and the ones in its corridor had a totally different numbering system from the rest of the floor, so I assume they were being Crowne Plaza'ed). The room had new paint, furniture and carpet, which was nice, and it was very clean, but it clearly wasn't ready for guests. There was no artwork or other decor anywhere, just vast blank walls; the sofabed was open (we hadn't asked for one) but unmade--we had to close it up to get around the room; there was old microwave on the floor of the closet (in addition to the functioning one in the room); there was no phone book and neither a TV channel guide nor any hotel info other than a room service menu (when we asked we were told there should have been a looseleaf of info re amenities and such, but they had no extras to give us); the alarm clock didn't work, and both ice machines on the floor were non-functioning.

One of the benefits of this hotel is free parking for guests in the attached garage, and for the first two days we were there the gates were open, allowing easy access. On the third day, the gates were down, requiring the hotel key to be swiped for entry and exit--but they didn't work, for us or anyone else, and every time anyone entered or exited, they had to press a button to be connected (eventually) to some unseen human who would open the gate, leading to long back-ups to enter or leave.

This hotel is in a great location and is attractive, but it seem to be in a a limbo between brands, where no one really cares how things are going. I wouldn't try it again until Crowne Plaza has had a few months to pull things together.
