Many years ago I had the good fortune to eat lunch at what was then the Ragamont Inn in Salisbury, Connecticut. I was 8 years old, so most of those details escape me. Between then and now, the Inn had closed and was left mostly unattended and uncared for. A few years ago it was purchased by Pete Hathaway, a former European arts expert in the high-end auction world. He spent solid time renovating and furnishing this lovely old New England inn and filled the place with antiques, 19th and 20th century paintings, sculpture and decorative items. This gives the new Ragamont B&B a sense of comfortable lived-in-ness as well as plush luxury. The sitting rooms beg for an afternoon reading on a snowy day and the rear gardens draw you out, experiencing its three seasons of lush flora. There is a sense of peace and quiet here, away from main Street and the traffic. It is a perfect place for careful meditation. There is a terrace overlooking the garden and a large outdoor fireplace that Pete lights during the cooler evenings in the spring, summer and fall. The rooms are few (three) but they are worth the stay. Lovely linens, light and privacy are their hallmarks. Prices range from $180 to $250 per night double-occupancy. Breakfast is all house-made, including the granola and bagels(!) and is strictly continental. The chef will, however, design and serve dinners for parties of up to 18 people with prior consent and preparation. I found that the location is perfect for visiting any of the four private schools (Berkshire, Salisbury, Hotchkiss, Indian Mountain) in the immediate area or attending any number of summer musical and arts events (Music Mtn, Tanglewood, Berk Theater Fest, etc...) in Litchfiled and Berkshire counties. Please be sure to book ahead well in advance and experience this wonderful place.
