“Not Recommended”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2010

We stayed at the Econo Lodge because we were attending a wedding nearby. The location to the reception was wonderful. Unfortunately that is about the only good thing I can add for this hotel. Having stayed at many hotels both good and bad, I must add that you usually get what you pay for. In this case the hotel is so cheap that you can’t possibly expect service much above what we received….so I’m not totally shooting it down. I just want to explain for travelers that this hotel operates on the barest accommodation level they possibly can and is probably closer to a 1 star then the advertised 2.

The walls, doors, and pretty much anything in the common areas and rooms is in need of a severe cleaning and painting. There were spider webs and a slight odor in our first floor non-smoking queen room. One good thing is that is seems like they just recently put down new carpet because that was not too bad. The sheets were clean overall and appeared to be in reasonable shape though the comforter was disgusting. The towels were not in good shape and were the thinnest I have ever experienced. The bathroom was barely acceptable to take showers in. I did find 2 bugs….. Also the walls are paper thin and the mattress was old. We luckily brought our own pillows because the one’s provided were really thin. Common hallways were not air-conditioned even though it was 90 degrees outside.

On a positive note, the staff was nice enough and were more than willing to help one of our family members switch rooms when their AC was not working. It is very close to the highway which was nice. Overall I would not recommend this hotel….but if you want to save some money and don’t care about total cleanliness or the quality of the accommodations, then this may work because it is not the worst hotel I have ever stayed at! It’s just not the kind of place I would subject us to again even at ½ the cost of other hotels in the area. We needed to air out our suitcases when we got home and were really happy to have only stayed there 1 night.

“50/50”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2009

the econolodge isn't as bad as it was as a daysinn about 2 years ago, but it still needs tons of improvement. The bathrooms smell like old midew, and during a week stay, housekeeping never came in to vacuum or make up beds. The doors stick, and the service could be better, however this motel is better than many others in the area, such as the Knights Inn,and the Red Carpet Inn. You really are better staying in a surrounding town, such as meriden,or waterbury. This econolodge really isn't very handicapped acsessible, and the location isn't that great. But you get what you pay for.

“Hard on the Handi-capped”

For one of our party, we needed handicapped-accessible lodging. Well, this was NOT the place to stay! We were too late to book more wisely for the weekend of Yale's graduation, so there was no where else we could have gone. To convert rooms for "handicap-access" the hotel had made a sloping entrance into its basement. This entrance was the extent of the "accessibility"; if you needed a high toilet, wheelchair space around the toilet or extra grab bars, forget it. ALL of these "accessible" rooms were smoking rooms (--none of us smoked). The hall itself positively reeked of cigarettes--and urine. It smelled like parts of the Port Authority bus terminal. The rooms themselves "only" stunk of smoke. The housekeeping was poor. Cigarette burns marred the bathtubs and sinks; the bedspread was pocked with burns. The "white" towels were literally grey with age. The pieces of furniture were banged up or even damaged. We had only one chair instead of two. The iron and ironing board were missing. In one room, the high basement window curtains were partially unhooked and could not be closed; in the other room the clothes rack was unusable (there were no closets), actually hanging off the wall. Staff members individually tried to be helpful, but the whole set-up was the problem. To be fair for this review, I did patroll the upper two floors--one was all non-smoking and the top was a wing of each. None smelled at all and the linens in the carts outside rooms being made up looked acceptable. The furnishings up there were all the same as ours, but in good condition. It looked like the nothing-special but satisfacory Days Inn we had hoped we were booking. BUT, again, if you need handicapped accessible space, even if you smoke, this hotel is the literal PITS.
