“This place was disgusting!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2010

You could not pay me to stay here again! The room was so gross I could not wait to check out. It stunk like mildew probably because of the amount of it found in the bathroom. The bed had some kind of gross something on the side of the mattress that looked like vomit. When we notified the staff they said they would send someone in...we went to dinner and came back to find a nasty used sponge on our night stand and the stain was not even cleaned. The carpet smelled so bad I would not let the kids take their shoes off. We stayed here with family to take the kids on the Essex Steam train for the Polar Express. We were supposed to have adjoining rooms (we booked it months before) and did not get them...I don't think they have any. People said you get what you pay for but this was not even worth a $1.

“Rooms smelled like vomit mixed with cleaners”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

Stay away from this hotel. Our extended family stayed in four different rooms. All four rooms were disgusting. When we entered the room we were hit by a horrible odor that lingered throughout the night. One shower curtain had mold on it. The beds were uncomfortably hard with sheets that felt like sandpaper. Our comforter had large stains on it. The blanket on the bed had a hole in it from a cigarette burn even though we were in a non-smoking room.

“It worked for us”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 April 2010

We just needed a place to spend the night on a long trip. We were going to see friends in the area and knew we wouldn't be in the room for long. The check-in attendant was friendly and helpful with directions. The room was very basic but was fairly spacious, clean and had a refrigerator and coffee maker.
There are several restaurants near the hotel but I can't vouch for them because we didn't try any. The main part of Old Saybrook is about a 5-minute drive from the hotel.
We had our dog with us and there are several grassy areas where we could walk him.
We had a non-smoking room but I could smell smoke either from people smoking outside or the room next door. it wasn't unbearable but if someone is extremely sensitive to this they should be aware.
We left early in the morning and the breakfast was not being served at that time, so I can't give an opinion on that.
The mattress was not very comfortable. It seemed too soft and somewhat lumpy.
We got a very low rate for our room and were satisfied with what we got. If passing through again, I'd have no problem revisiting this hotel.

“Nice Stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2009

We have stayed here several times and find it adequate. The staff is pleasant and accommodating. The rooms are older, but we found them to be clean and comfortable.

“Good budget hotel, great place for dogs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 March 2009

We bring our two big dogs on most trips so we end up in budget motels, they just work better. This motel was one of the lowest prices in the area. Compared to some of the reviews for the other hotels, it was a good value. The room was clean and had a new TV, fridge and shower head and curtain (the kind that bows out even). There was new vinyl tile in the bathroom and a hairdryer. The bed was comfortable and had nice pillows. In this price range, it was actually one of the nicest we have stayed in lately.

If you are bringing dogs, I would recommend calling them instead of making your reservation over the internet since there wasn't any way to indicate we had dogs when I used the Days Inn website. That created some confusion and they put us in a non-dog room (it was in the same condition) but we got it all worked out in the end. The dog room was facing out back where there is a little grassy area to walk them complete with a garbage can to clean up. It was super convenient.

The only downside I could give is that the hotel seemed to lack a little maintenance. The ice machine didn't work and the juice machine also didn't work at the breakfast area. The room did have some repair issues, nothing big but just left me feeling like maintenance and quality work wasn't a priority.

All in all I give it a thumbs up.
