Stayed as part of a promotion in January 2012. We had the Miss James Suite. overall, we really enjoyed our stay. The property is very convenient to the main street area in old saybrook. Our room was well furnished, very comfortable bed with a modern, clean bathroom. Everything in the main house is lovely, lots of nice decorative touches. Innkeeper was very welcoming. The only negative thing to mention is that at least in the part of the property where we were staying, the walls are paper thin. It didn't bother us because at night, the place was quiet but if you are sensitive to noise, this might not be the place for you. It's possible that some of the rooms in the main house are quieter but as we didn't stay there, I can't comment. It's also worth mentioning that the house is on the historic register and dates from the 18th century so I doubt there's anything that can be done to improve this...just part of being in an older property. Furthermore, you can easily stay at a five star chain and have the same problem. I also think it worth mentioning that our room definitely had a key that we could lock upon leaving contrary to what you may read in other reviews.
overall, this place has a lot of character and would be a great place to stay when visiting the area and looking for accommodations that are cozy and welcoming.
