The Silvermine Tavern offers an increasingly rare experience of an old building that has not been drained of its character in order to fit the fads of contemporary travellers. This is a unique place where you can feel the ambiance of a previous era whilst enjoying a wonderful reception from Frank Whitman the proprietor. If you want a hotel knee deep in city hotel ' designer glamour' and 'every' modern comfort stay away. But if you like uncluttered history and having breakfast on the deck overlooking the river, this is for you. We will long remember our leisurely breakfasts watching the birds and having a chat with Frank.
The rooms are distinctive , spacious and comfortable. ( Read the accounts of minute hotel rooms in New York and then think of the virtues of the modest and efficent rail commute from Grand Central to Norwalk , or the half hour to New Haven.)
The small community of Silvermine provides a basis for a quiet and beautiful circular walk, that can include the Guild Art Gallery , an antique shop and a local cafe.
New Caanan, a quiet small town, about 5 minutes away by car offers a rich variety of places to eat well, and the Lichfield Hills and other scenic locales are an hour's drive away.
I very much hope that we will be fortunate enough to return to Silvermine Tavern.
