“Charming Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We visited Silvermine Tavern on our honeymoon road trip. What you will find are a beautiful historic house and milieu, charmingly decorated rooms, and most of all, a cultivated super-nice innkeeper. I highly recommend a stay if you’re visiting the state :)

“Charming Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

We really enjoyed our time staying at the Silvermine Tavern. There is a lot of history surrounding the property and there are many antiques to see throughout. The room we stayed in was comfortable and clean. I liked having the claw foot tub vs. a shower in our room because I felt it added to the whole relaxing, laid back experience. Frank, the innkeeper, as well as various neighbors were extremely nice and helpful with suggestions. The area is quiet but not too far from the town's center which you can get to by car. We were quite content with walking to the local market to get something to eat. The Tavern's breakfast area overlooks a river and the waterfall nearby is nice to check out during a walk. We would definitely recommend staying at Silvermine Tavern and would stay there again.

Room Tip: There are rooms across from the main inn where pets are allowed.

“What a treat!”

We stopped at the Silvermine Tavern on the way to a family vacation on Cape Cod. We chose this inn because we wanted to visit The Glass House in nearby New Canaan. Frank, the Innkeeper, met us and showed us around. He was friendly and accomodating and provided us with lots of recommendations for restaurants and local attractions. When he found out we were headed the The Glass House the next day he gave us a book on the New Canaan architects. Our room was well-furnished, clean, and comfortable. One of the biggest treats was breakfast on the deck overlooking a beautiful stream and eating Frank's homemade grainola, the best I have ever eaten.

“Avoid boutique hotels and stay in an American Classic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2011

The Silvermine Tavern offers an increasingly rare experience of an old building that has not been drained of its character in order to fit the fads of contemporary travellers. This is a unique place where you can feel the ambiance of a previous era whilst enjoying a wonderful reception from Frank Whitman the proprietor. If you want a hotel knee deep in city hotel ' designer glamour' and 'every' modern comfort stay away. But if you like uncluttered history and having breakfast on the deck overlooking the river, this is for you. We will long remember our leisurely breakfasts watching the birds and having a chat with Frank.

The rooms are distinctive , spacious and comfortable. ( Read the accounts of minute hotel rooms in New York and then think of the virtues of the modest and efficent rail commute from Grand Central to Norwalk , or the half hour to New Haven.)

The small community of Silvermine provides a basis for a quiet and beautiful circular walk, that can include the Guild Art Gallery , an antique shop and a local cafe.

New Caanan, a quiet small town, about 5 minutes away by car offers a rich variety of places to eat well, and the Lichfield Hills and other scenic locales are an hour's drive away.

I very much hope that we will be fortunate enough to return to Silvermine Tavern.

“Peace and Tranquility”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

My stay at the Silvermine Tavern was wonderful. I was greeted by Frank at the door when I arrived. He was friendly and informative. I was staying in the area for a tour of the Philip Johnson Glass House and Frank provided me with a book that gave me some great background information before my tour. A welcome packet was available with a map of the area and recommendations for dining. I enjoyed a three mile scenic walk into New Canaan and explored the town before dinner. I was thrilled to find several options for my vegetarian life style and enjoyed both dinner and lunch at Le Pain Quotidien.

The Inn is charming and peaceful. I enjoyed reading on the deck overlooking the river in the evening while indulging in some of the honey buns and homemade granola that had been made available. The rooms are simple and comfortable. While the claw foot tub was not ideal for bathing, it was delightful for soaking in before I started my day.
