“2nd time just as nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

this hotel makes visiting the university a pleasure. Stayed at the Courtyard for the second time this year and thought it was just as nice as the first time which I really enjoyed. Having a place to stay figured out is always a relief, because you can make your other plans knowing your location. The Courtyard is a natural first choice because of its convenient location across from Yale's athletic facility, and in York Square where there are all sorts of food and shopping options. I look forward to visiting the Courtyard again on my next stay in New Haven.

Room Tip: The rooms on the higher floors offer a nice view of the surrounding area

“Declining fast”

Have stayed here at least 15 times over the past 4 years. The location is pretty good and the rooms (at least the newer ones) and public spaces are slightly above average. Their less than adequate parking in terms of size and number of spots has been further diminished by the leasing of many of these limited spaces to the new apple store. Coming back to this hotel on many nights you may not be able to park your car but you will most certainly be assessed the increased parking rate of $18 per day. But the most annoying aspect of this place is the prominent placement of FREE WIFI on their website but almost complete lack of actual wifi at the hotel during my last 3 stays. During all 3 stays the lobby was filled with agitated people not being able to access the network. I brought this to the attention of management over a year ago and stayed here again believing it would be fixed. Also this is a noisy hotel with paper thin walls and a plumbing system that will whine all morning while people take their showers. I will be staying at the Omni or the Study from now on. The one positive at the Marriott, and the reason I feel bad about moving to another hote, is the excellent assistance we have been provided over the years from Michelle, one of the front desk staff members.

“Great stay...with one exception.”

I stayed in this hotel for one night in early December 2011. I grew up in this city and I remember when this used to be a substandard Holiday Inn. It has been remodeled and much improved. I have no complaints about the room - beds were comfortable, the room was clean and the front desk and dining area staff were friendly.

However...this is supposed to be a non-smoking hotel. But late in the evening of our stay, we detected an overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke in our room. We called the front desk and they sent up a maintenance engineer. The smell was coming through the bathroom vents which meant it was either coming from next door or above/below us. The person who came to our room entered, smelled the same thing we did, but proceeded to tell us that the hotel's ventilation system was working properly and a central fan would draw any smoke out of the system, so it couldn't be coming from the vents. Huh? That wasn't the problem. The problem is someone is smoking in your hotel and affecting other guests. I don't need a rambling response about your ventilation system. That is irrelevant (and made NO sense.) He then left. He said he didn't smell anything in the hallway. Well duh, you wouldn't if they were smoking in their bathroom and trying to cover the smell. No attempt was made to find the culprit (who was violating hotel policy and possibly the law.) The odor soon ceased - the smoker had likely gone to bed. By 7 am the next morning, they were up and at it again and the smell filled our bathroom and the rest of the room.

We called the front desk again and they ignored our complaint, sent no one to the room and again made no attempt to actually SOLVE THE PROBLEM. So we had smoke in our clothes and hair as we headed out to a funeral. Nice.

This hotel has two problems: Their ventilation system between rooms obviously isn't working. But more importantly, they just don't care that people are violating their policies and that other people's stay is negatively impacted.

“Good choice for the area .... if you must stay there ....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

The hotel is located within walking distance of Yale which is a good option for that location. The area immediately near the hotel is very problematic, homeless people, crime etc. The hotel has parking on premises but that is a problem when the hotel is full as it was when we were there. The spots are extremely small so parking can be difficult if not impossible to get in/out of spots. One person in our party was forced to park on the street since there was no more parking at the hotel. Very expensive equipment was stoled from the car overnight. Apparently this was no surprise to the hotel employees.
Other than the area, the hotel is very adequate. The lobby seems new small but very nice. The rooms are very small and the bathroom tiny, but all rooms are equipped with a large mini fridge and coffee machine. The hotel although old seems reasonably clean. The staff at the hotel was great and very accommodating and certainly tries to make up for any issues that might arise.

“Nice enough option in downtown New Haven”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

I stayed at this hotel for four nights when touring one of the graduate schools at Yale. I got a very good price via Priceline, so I was quite happy with the hotel given the lower rate. The hotel is older, but I found the rooms to be pretty similar to other Marriotts. They were doing construction work on the lobby during our visit, which was annoying, but hopefully resulted in a nicer setting. The lobby is adequate, but not a place you would want to linger. The location is ok, on the border of the Yale campus and a much less affluent area. We did have some issues with noise from the Popeye's across the street - apparently a late night hangout for some. Overall, a fine place to stay if you can get a good rate.
