Stay nowhere else in Connecticut, if you can help it - really! The Tidewater Inn does everything right.
The place itself is gorgeous in every detail of decorating and comfort. It's a trip to the most elegant facets of 19th century New England (and my son and I were last there for the Inn's lovely Christmas), but without any stuffiness. The rooms are to die for, too.
The place is owned by Victoria, and she has a way of creating a very personal experience without any hovering or intrusiveness. She's also the most amazing cook; there's no better breakfast in New England. And, you'll meet very interesting people around the elegant dining room table.
A word of caution: book early. This is not a place - especially in the summer - for spontaneously dropping in. The Tidewater fills up fast, as one would expect. So, do some planning if you want New England's best B&B experience.
