My husband and I decided to visit Misquamicut Beach in Westerley, RI. We were unable to book a room at a, what we felt to be, a reasonable price. We settled upon the Knights Inn in Groton, CT. because it was not only a short drive to the beach we were headed to but it was also close to Mystic, Foxwoods Casino and the Mohegan Sun.
I was not expecting a 5 star or even a 2 star hotel for that matter after reading the reviews on various websites about this particular hotel but I also was not expecting what we ended up with. There was no Continental breakfast (but we could live with that), and the towels were thin and the TV's color/contrast was off, very dark but again, compared to our ordeal, these were minor issues.
Upon arrival, my immediate thoughts were "this is nothing more than a motel but so be it. It's only for a couple of nights". Walking in, my allergies were immediately compromised. The room had been heavily smoked in and for me, it was intolerable. However, the error was on my part as I did not realized I booked a smoking room. After much going back and forth (my husband and the front desk), they did agree to switch our room. The room was on the second floor but that was fine as long as I could breath.
While in the new room (1st night), I jokingly said to my husband "maybe we should check for bedbugs". We didn't and went to sleep. 3:48AM my husband wakes up and says somethings biting me. I felt a sting on my arm and said I've been bit too but I saw mosquitoes in the room earlier when we opened to door to allow for fresh air. My husband decided to check the bed. To our shock and horror, there were BEDBUGS! After killing about 20, my husband decided to bag a few of them and show them to hotel mgmt. The manager was not in. The woman at the front desk (the same person who changed our room) said to my husband "there can't be bedbugs. Our exterminator guaranteed his work!". My husband said, well, here's the proof. You wanna hold on to them?!?. She said no. My husband felt our room should be changed but I did not want to go through the process of checking and killing again. Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep. Night 2, before going to bed we did another check which didn't show any bedbugs but we sensed there were more. We go to sleep, and once again awaken bitten (around 1am). By then, my husband decided to stay up on "bedbug watch" allowing my severely sleep deprived self to go to sleep. More, and more bedbugs. Large and small. Every hr I woke up feeling as if something was crawling on me. My husband never went to sleep and he was our driver home. Finally, at 5am, we decided to pack up and leave. I have never, ever in my life been so disgusted! It certainly makes me not want to travel anymore.
