“O M G!! Not even if it was the last place on Earth, would I stay there again!!!”
So, through Hotwire I "bid on a 3* hotel, my husband and I were going to The Mohegan Sun Casino and Spa for New Year's (which is only 30 minutes away) and most if not all the surrounding hotels were completely booked (it was, after all, New Year's Eve and we were looking on the 30th..I know, I know).
Hotwire did not have much choice, so I thought a 3* would not be that bad, as an avid traveller I am used to staying in chains such as The Thompson, The W, The Hyatt, The Kimpton, etc.. So a 3* is a bit of a step down, but given the circumstances, I thought "how bad could it be??"
Well...... O M G!! First off, we arrive at the hotel to an insane line up of people waiting to check in, fine it's New Year's Eve, I will let that one slide. The lobby was cluttered with, what I will call for lack of a better word, undesirables, to the point where both my husband and myself started to get uncomfortable.
Apparently, there was a New Year's Eve party that the hotel was preparing for. From the type of music that was blaring, the party should have been in Little Jamaica (this is not an ignorant comment, I'm just stating the facts, The promoters on the flyer were The Dunn's River Falls Entertainment)
Check in was real quick, without a greeting or even looking up to see if my face matched the picture on the photo id, I was given a room key and room number.
The room key we were given did not work all of the 30 times that we tried. Ended up having the maintenance guy let us into our room. We were then switched rooms as we were informed that if the key didn't work, we would be on our own because the maintenance guy as well as the front desk would be off for the night (go figure!?!).
That key actually worked!!! (Please note that we were not the only ones with key issues, when my husband went to complain, there were dozens of others complaining about the same thing).
The room was just ewwww... Peeling wall paper, bath tub with black grout in the tiles, toilet that would not stop running, stained carpets, to name a few notables. Also, in 2011, I didn't even know they still made TV's that were not flat screen, I mean it was HUGE!!
At that point we are already there, so let's just make the best of it.
We arrived back at the hotel at about 1:30am to a ridiculous amount (I would say at least 150 - 200 people) of again, undesirables, loitering the lobby, very intimidating welcome back. Music sooo loud you couldn't hear your own voice and people in the hallways loud talking. I had never seen anything like it.. We got to our room and for the next 2-3 hours could hear fighting in the halls, yelling, screaming, not very conducive for someone waking up at 7am to drive 7 hours back home.
Needless to say, we didn't even shower, as there was NO WAY I was gonna use the bathtub.
I was extremely nervous about bed bugs, so I kept everything elevated on the wood tables.
To top it off, when leaving, my husband hands in the key card (not sure why, they are useless) to "What's yo room numba?" No, "how was your stay?" or "thank you for staying with Hartford Plaza Hotel".
Never Again...
