“More a hotel than a B&B”

We can echo the previous reviewer of the Cos Cob Inn not being what we expected--not bad, just different. The Inn is in a large house, but has a distinct hotel feel to it. I don't think it should be classified as a Bed & Breakfast by any means, since breakfast is just a continental selection and not a meal served from the host. You park at the inn, walk across the street to an office and get your keys from a receptionist. Like the other reviewer, we didn't see another soul the entire time.

We stayed in the Venice room on the third floor, a quaint room with a decent sized bathroom and a very tall and comfortable queen bed. The room is stocked like a hotel--TV and mini-fridge in the hutch, mints and chocolate treats on the table, iron and ironing board in the corner. The rooms are done by numbers and not by name when you get in, which adds to the hotel feel. Aside from some leftover wrappers from previous patrons, the room was very clean and had everything we needed. The only complaint would be the window overlooking the front of the house and the "water." You actually have a pretty good view of I-95 and the thin glass/poorly sealed window leaked a lot of noise. Climate control was a bit lacking as well.

We chose Cos Cob Inn to help split up a long trip from Maine, and the lack of a full breakfast meant we didn't feel bad getting up early and leaving before food was put out in the common room. Our checkout was as simple as leaving the keys in the room, so we didn't have any trouble on our way out.

All-in-all it was like a nice, small, quiet hotel with perfect amenities and nice rooms. It's no B&B though, so if that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere.

  • Liked — Outstanding amenities and very pretty interior.
  • Disliked — Very impersonal and nothing within walking distance.

“Does anyone work here?”

We stayed at the Cos Cob Inn last summer. I was looking for an outpost so we could so daytrips in the Western part of the state for the first half of the week, and then we were planning on finishing out the week in Mystic. This inn was nice, but a bit of a weird experience. When we arrived, we realized you had to go across the street to this shipyard under major construction. There was a person in an empty office who barely greeted you and handed you keys -- that was the last time we saw anyone! We had booked the The Wedding Suite, which was on the ground floor, across from the Common Room (kind of a weird place for a honeymoon suite if you ask me).

The room was really nice -- huge with a sitting room, sofa, bar, and TV, the bedroom had a large four poster bed, TV, closets, burea, table and chairs, then another set of chairs in front of the fire place. THEN, there was a little room with a vanity to apply makeup at (with a sink, but the seat was covered with old makeup), a room with a toilet and sink, and then another room with the hot tub and shower. With the exception of the seat, it was all very clean and well maintained.

The view wasn't that great -- we looked at the main road and shipyard from our window, but it's all rather industrial. I thought there would be a cute pier we could walk on, but there's nothing in walking distance and it's all very residential. I would suggest this as a place to stay when visiting family, not really a relaxing seaside getaway.

One other issue was the noise level -- every morning at 7, breakfast was set up, right across from our room and it woke us up. Then, people start filing in and out at 8, so it gets even noisier. The breakfast was the usual -- bagels, muffins, cereal, etc. Only two little tables were in the little common room, so we often brought food back to the room and ate there.

Overall, we liked it. We definitely got our money's worth -- it just wasn't what we expected.

  • Liked — The size and quality of the room
  • Disliked — The lack of staff and the atmosphere

June 10. We stayed one night in the Wedding Suite for our 6th year anniversary and it was an excellent choice. The decor was beautiful. The robes and slippers were a nice touch! You definately could live there for a week with no problems the way it was set up. The continental breakfast had a nice variety of breakfast items.

“A real treat”

We have now stayed at this inn twice and have found it delightful on both occasions. Rooms are beautifully (and individually) furnished, with nice little touches such as wine glasses filled with chocolates next to the jacuzzi. The "continental breakfast plus" is generous and substantial, with a range of cereals, breads, patisserie, juices, yogurts, and fabulous fresh fruit salads, eaten against a background of soft classical music. We'll be back!
