“a bit disappointing”

New owners since May, 2010. They are a nice family from KS but not sure they have a clue how to run a B&B. The run out of very limited menu items which was disappointing at breakfast. Few people stayed there overnight and they ran out of all egg dishes and served what looked like Eggo's waffles and fatty bacon. Children were servers and both dinner (one dish meal) night before and breakfast, the food comes, then you must ask for utensils and then ask for napkins. They need some training on the very basics.
Some deferred maintenance in rooms - cracked tile in bathroom, extension cords to plug lamps into. Take something to do in the evening as they are in a fairly isolated location with no TV, phones, etc. No liquor license. I wish them luck.

“Great Restaurant, Friendly Owners”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2009

We recently stayed in Leadville, CO and took a day trip to Aspen. On our return we stopped in at the Inn of the Black Wolf to make a stop in the bar. The restaurant dining room is quaint. We ordered at the bar, and they allowed us to sit in the rocking chairs in front of a crackling fire. The owner stopped to speak with us and informed us that we could have appetizers by the fire. We ordered a fantastic cheese plate which was loaded with cheese from a local goat farm as well as fruit. It was a great value in a lovely surrounding. The owner invited us to view the rooms - they looked clean and charming. The dinner menu for the restaurant looked excellent. Although we did not stay at the Inn I recommend the restaurant.

“Disappointing stay”

The new owners have driven this property into the ground. They care more about running a restaurant than an enjoyable B&B. We were there to celebrate our anniversary - got married there when it was the Nordic Lodge in 2004. Happened to be there during the Augtoberfest. What a bust. Drunk attendees were wandering around the Inn using the Inn guest's bathrooms and the restaurant was a huge disapointment. Horrible service from our 18 year old server, they ran out of all the German food and ended up paying way too much for over-cooked elk with a horrible sauce on it. I have wonderful memories of the Nordic - it was a quaint, nice B&B with wonderful service and great food. What a let down for what we returned too and the new owners not caring too much about anything other than a profit.

“Relaxing Get-Away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2008

A very friendly staff who makes you feel at home from the moment you walk in the door.

Excellent location in close proximity to hiking trails, Not much for hiking? Grap a book off the shelf and spend enjoying the day reading away on the front porch or side yard. Either place you will be treated to spectacular mountain views.

Come back from a long hike and drink a few glasses of wine with the friendly bartenders and servers. They may even treat you to a piano tune or two. Locals love to talk about their adventures, sports and politics.

Enjoy a well designed meal and head up to your bedroom upstairs in this historical Inn and dream about all those who have passed through over the past hundreds of years.

If you're looking for 5-star accomodations...then drive on by. Here you'll be served a great smile, comfy warm spaces and great conversations in front of the fireplace. Take a deep breath and relax....

  • Liked — Friendly staff
  • Disliked — Plumbing needs to be fixed so the warm showers are possble.

“Great place to ecape our everyday lives....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2008

A nice group of staff who make you feel comfortable right away when you arrive. The locals love to talk sports, hiking and politics around the barstools. The meals served to us were excellent .

Plenty of hiking trails nearby to go and enjoy the beauty of the mountains. Don't feel like hiking, then grab a book of their shelf and enjoy the day reading away on the front porch or the side yard...In either place the mountain and lake views are a sight to be seen.

Come in after a day on the trails and drink some wine with the friendly bartenders and servers. One of them might even play a piano tune or two for you.

Head for the bedrooms in this historical buidling and you can imagine the sounds of the former borders and the old stagecoaches that once frequented the Inn. Enjoy, relax.

If your're looking for 5 star luxury accomodations, then pass this Inn on by. But if you are looking for a warm, friendly place to relax and make friends for a few days... this is the place. Come on in, the door is always open. P.S. I liked the Payne Peak room.

  • Liked — Friendly staff, good food, excellent location for hiking trails
  • Disliked — The plumbing should redone to allow both Hot, Warm and Cold water to run out of the showers.
