Stayed here for three days last weekend for a spur of the moment ski trip. We saw that a good storm system was moving in and promising the best powder yet in a slow ski season. Booked through a well known "name your price" website and scored an incredible bargain. I kept thinking that over the course of the weekend, I would figure out why this place was available so cheap. Turns out, I was just lucky. This is by far the best Holiday Inn I have stayed at. I usually opt for 4 star hotels but since this was last minute, I just wanted a good value and comfy bed. I got that and much more.
It started with the employees. All extremely friendly and genuinely glad to have us. The room was very comfortable & recently updated with flat screens, granite counters etc. The on site restaurant was very good, definitely not your typical hotel restaurant. The shuttle service to and from the ski area was convenient, fast and again super friendly. The kids loved the indoor pool and hot tub area which was immaculately clean and perfect temps for both.
The only downside I can find for this property is that it is neither downtown nor in the ski village, which would both be preferred locations for obvious reasons. For us, it was not much of a sacrifice. We were able to drive downtown in ten minutes to enjoy restaurants and shopping, and the shuttle to the ski mountain took about 5 minutes each way. Sure, skiing in and out of your condo is great but those properties get top dollar for that convenience. Downtown hotels here tend to be older and less appointed for the same price if not higher. If this had been a friends trip or even just adults, perhaps the ability to walk home a block or so from one of the many saloons or restaurants would have been more attractive. For us, it was in bed by 10 and up the next morning to ski so that was never an issue.
Steamboat itself is a great destination for skiers and boarders, with an amazing mountain and a town with tons of authentic western charm but none of the pretentiousness of Vail and Aspen. In the summer it is equally beautiful with incredible outdoor adventure at every turn. Either way, the humble Holiday Inn is our new place in Steamboat and we will be back.
