“"Clean and adequate lodging"”

We stayed in room B-105, a 3/3, on January 21-28th 2012 along with a much larger group. We stayed here several years ago with much worse reviews. They promised us much better rooms and they delivered.
Some good things: Granite countertops (tiles not slab), spread out bedrooms, OK location (walk to slopes, 400 yards), updated, hardly any noise from rooms around us, no stairs in units.
Not so good: no elevators in complex
No washer and dryer in most rooms, you have to request them beforehand, there are community w/d.
The parking lot can be icy, my friend and I both fell pretty bad in the upper lot near the D building, she was carring skis!
Our coffee pot didn't shut off automatically, we came home a few days to burnt dry coffee, it was still on!
The condos are a little small especially in the 3/3 units, I don't know if they were even 1000sq. ft.

Room Tip: Ask for ground level, also washer/dryer in your room. Be careful walking in the parking lot, especia...

Dear Kegabeer,

Thank you for your recent favorable review of The Lodge at Steamboat. We always enjoy seeing members of the Florida Ski Council and the Jacksonville Ski Club. The Lodge at Steamboat is ideally suited to large groups because we have 120 individually decorated condominiums. With such a large number of units, we try to have something for everyone and can keep large groups reasonably close together.

We will look forward to seeing you return soon.

Regards,

“B105 Convenient, Dated, but adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Pros. Friendly, helpful desk staff. Good shuttle service by Steamboat resorts. Coffee, donuts and a fireplace are available while waiting for shuttle. Easy walking distance to Gondola Square if you know the short cut. This 3 BR unit is close to the hot tub and laundry but shielded from noise. Nice view of the mountain from the living room.
Cons. This unit needs renovation. Old formica countertops and 19" CRT televisions are not acceptable today. Beds and pillows are very firm to hard. Cooking utensils very limited. Many of the cups and glasses were chipped. Knives almost useless. Maid service is supposed to be every other day...it's a drive by unless you call the office and insist on actual cleaning.

Room Tip: Top floors have better views and don't get noise from other units, but you have to carry bags up...

Dear OldDukeDoc,

Thanks for your recent review on Trip Advisor. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay. Our friendly staff, excellent shuttle service, and amazing donuts always receive great comments. Your comments regarding the unit B105 will be shared with the owner and we will work to improve the unit – you are right that old CRT televisions and old formica are outdated for today’s travelers.

There has been some questions regarding our housekeeping service, especially for ski groups like the Florida Ski Council. We provide towel service and bed make up service every other day during your stay. Additional services are available upon request. While we do our best to inform guests of the amenities and services at the property prior to arrival, we realize that Ski Group information often goes through a number of people before reaching the individual guests. We should have done a better job of detailing our housekeeping services for you upon check-in. We will strive to do a better job.

“Nice Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

My wife and I stayed in Unit B-304. It was nice, although dated. Bed was nice and firm. Friendly staff. Our unit is on the end and no one stayed below us, so we had no noise problems, except when someone checked in next door.

At the suggestion of staff, we rented skis at Terry Sports, as they are next door. They have a location on the mountain in Ski Times Square. The shuttle took us straight there and we stored skis there at night. Very convenient to drop skis and head over to Slopeside or Tugboat for après ski. When we dropped our skis slope side, they gave us a hard time about not returning to the location where we rented, but took them anyway.
We did Happy Hour at La Montana next door and the food and drinks were good. Looks overpriced for dinner.

Shuttle Service was great. To the mountain, to the grocery and to downtown. One minor snafu. When we were dropped at Mahogany Ridge for dinner, the driver did not tell us that they don’t pick up from that corner. We flagged down a shuttle, but he flew by us screaming something we could not understand. The second shuttle did stop, picked us up and explained the rules about pick up only at 6th and 11th.

“Feeling fleeced and not in the warm, fuzzy way.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

A distinctly bad experience. Problems centered around poorly stocked and unsafe kitchen and shocking bad service, esp. housekeeping. Was traveling as a family with 4 kids aged 4-10 and staying in 2BR unit.

Kitchen: Horrible equipment quality as well as content. Knives infinitely worse than the usual bad knives you find at rental condos. Absolutely unusable. Meager equipment: One badly damaged 8" nonstick skillet. No baking sheets. No 9X13 pan. Made cooking the most basic meal very difficult. Worse yet: an electric coil element range with coils so badly warped on all but one burner that the pans kept sliding off of them. Incredibly dangerous: esp with kids around. I almost doused myself in hot oil when I was preheating the skillet and it slid right off toward me. Barely saved it. Also, fridge didn't have working ice maker. Two ice trays were provided.

Also, no in-unit laundry (it's in the basement and better bring your quarters...), and the hot tubs are shared and a hike from the units).

Housekeeping: Total fiasco. Was told housekeeping= "towel service-" was every other day. On our first day when we were supposed to receive cleaning, only MBR bed was made sloppily and towels were changed. NOTHING else was touched: no more shampoo, no counters wiped down, no vacuuming or floor sweeping or clean towels or ANYTHING. Called and asked if I should have expected normal housekeeping and receptionist confirmed my expectations. Said they'd be there the next day to do proper cleaning. Didn't happen. Following day, only MBR and 2 beds made. Top bunk unmade. Again, nothing else done. Saw Manager on Duty "MOD" (again, confirming with him that I should have expected dishwasher emptied, counters wiped, etc.) and he sent housekeeping to rectify. They came and cleaned properly. While they were here we received a gift basket and card. Card said their housekeeping is a "towel replacement service" but to make me happy they'd do a proper cleaning the following day as well. [Oh gosh, sorry to be so high maintenance.] Flash forward apres ski the next day and- surprise- untouched room. Mentioned to MOD again and he said they just hadn't gotten to me yet [Uh huh. At 3:30?]

As a side note, while the housekeepers were cleaning, my husband noted that the amount of crap that was being vacuumed up from the carpets was amazing. It clearly hadn't been done for quite a while.

Finally, mattress on sleeper sofa was so thin as to be unbearable. Even for my 65 lb 8-year-old.

Would have awarded 2 stars (nice proximity and frequent, convenient, friendly shuttle service) but for the absurd price we paid. We paid $800/night for this. Two years ago at a peak week (spring break), we paid less than $600/night for 4BR unit with gorgeous views, in-unit laundry, 8-person hot tub, well-stocked kitchen, and luxurious MBR suite that was a 5 minute on-demand shuttle ride from the slopes.

I give some credit for this kerfuffle to Steamboat Central Reservations. I was very clear when I booked that I needed in-unit laundry and a well-stocked kitchen. Either they don't know the properties they're booking very well or they don't expect repeat bookings (or they tack on an exorbitant premium that results in over-priced lodging...).
