We spent one night at the Grand Imperial, arriving via the Durango-Silverton narrow gauage railroad, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The rooms and lobby evoke the 19th century West, as does the entire town. The high ceilings, antique bed, spacious room, and spare but servicable bath were as expected in an historic hotel. Be aware that there are no elevators and the altitude may make carrying luggage up two or three flights a challenge, but we had no problem. The attached restaurant, Grumpy's, features animal taxidermy on the walls, a great bar and an "old-timey" piano player at lunch. The hotel claims a ghost, but we were not visited by it or by any cares during our fun stay.
