“The HWH was awsome!”

Enroute to San Diego from New Hampshire by motorcycle me and my wife found ourselves in Ouray, late in the afternoon, tired from the winding Rt550 and wanting to call it a day. Unfortunately Ouray was crowded for some reason and luckily there were no rooms available any wheres but the HWH. What a treat. We loved it and it is one of the many memorable parts of our 2 wheeled vacation.

The proprietor greeted us, was accomadating, friendly and courteous. Once checked in we hunkerd to the bar for libations and deliscious food. We weren't disappointed. We spent the evening there eating, drinking and chatting with other guest and diners.

This hotel is not your typical Comfort Inn,Holiday Inn etc... instead its a wonderful step back in time to an era long gone. If you're looking for a one of a kind experience check into the Historic Western Hotel, you won't regret it.

“Disappointing”

I am one all for history and that kind of thing and expected that from the Historic Western Hotel. I had come to the area because my friend was getting married and I was looking for an affordable place to stay and so I came across this place. The lobby was beautifully done, but I got a little worried when we went up the steps to the room, and when we got there the door handle was hanging loosely in the door.

I was shocked by the state of the room. The furnishings were all a mishmash of styles and looked unclean, one of the windows was missing a blind, there were weird stains on the carpet, the claw-foot tub hadn't been cleaned and the shower curtain didn't close all the way. When asked for a replacement blind knowing it was a stab in the dark the clerk offered a blanket.

I was very disappointed especially for how much I had to pay. I was scheduled to stay one more night but after my first experience and after seeing the lack of care they gave to the place I left and ended up staying in Montrose.

There is only one shower per wing with five rooms and it had a pair of dirty underwear hanging in it all day and all night. The carpet was disgusting looking and musty smelling. The food in the restaurant was ok but the service was very slow. This would be a pretty neat place if the owner would just put a little more effort in to it. I will never stay there again.

“Historic Hotel Really Means Old and Musty”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

After reading the reviews on Tripadvisor, I thought this hotel would be fun for our daughter and have more character than a chain motel. Unfortunately, the 'character' was just a dilapidated old building with the filthiest carpet i've ever seen. I did not want my kids to touch anything and seriously questioned whether or not we should even stay. Upon checking in, we realized the room we reserved would not accommodate a Pak N Play and asked for something larger. The larger room was exactly twice the price, and our only option. Since it was 9pm and the room was going to sit empty, I asked if they could come down on the price. The front desk person just gave me a "no" as he ran my card. Totally unimpressed. In this economy, you'd think people would work a little harder for the business. We left at 7am the next morning to stay elsewhere.

“Cheap and cool, but not for the Uppity traveler”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2010

This hotel is great in many ways, location, restaurant, price, and owners are fantastic, as is the San Juan jeep tour company ( not the posers next door). However, if you stay here, I'll warn you about what the other reviews have, creaky floors, dirty carpets, paint chipping off the ceiling and walls, no amenities in room (only one outlet per room, which is taken up by your lamp), unusable showers (fire and ice), paper thin walls, etc. That being said, they almost always have a vacancy, and they are about 1/3 the price of any where else in town. There is a ton of history here and i really hope that Greg and family get the place fixed up a little better.

If you are a good natured, adventurous, budget minded traveler, who can take things in stride and not let a few minor jncoveniences ruin you or your spouses trip, then this is the place!
