The Ouray hotel was built in 1893 and is only predated by one other hotel (by two years) in this historical town. Of course, most of the town of Ouray is from the late 19th century. We were just passing through while on an eleven day tour of southern Colorado and regretted that we could not stay here for two or three days. We love these old hotels and genuinely old towns that have not become tourist traps. I had e-mailed the owner before our trip began and he responded the same day with a friendly reply that said just stop in and he would give us what we wanted. So we did exactly that. He was a friendly guy and offered a number of priced rooms with varying size, number of beds, and extras. We chose the most affordable one at a mere $50 (plus tax) with one bed and without a nice view but it had a nice modern bathroom. There was no breakfast but there was a small room with coffee. The hotel is one flight up and you do need to tackle the stairs. After all it is an old historical hotel built with brick and still looks it save for the electricity, TV, and modern bath. Great place.
We want to return to Ouray, stay in the Ouray Hotel, and just relax for a few days and maybe drive over to Silverton for lunch one day. There is a printed sheet with a walking tour of historical buildings in town (this hotel is on it), the Box Canyon Waterfall is exciting, and for a small town the size of the warm swimming pool is incredible (warmed by a hot spring).
