“Sad to be so disappointed”

I usually try to find something positive, so I \will say the lobby is amazing, and is what has made me want to stay here for so many years. I love old hotels. I have stayed at hundreds. This hotel is sadly not just old. It's run down and, frankly, a little dangerous. Sparks should not fly out of outlets when I plug in my phone, and I shouldn't have to worry about burned out bulbs in the bathroom light fixtures in the middle of my shower. I changed over after the first night to the Hot Springs Lodge.

“Lovely weekend!”

We stayed for 2 nights in late October and found the hotel to be charming, the staff attentive and the massages relaxing. Yes, it's an old hotel - but that's what we were looking for. It's within easy walking distance of the town with restaurants, etc. and extremely close to the hot springs. Highly recommend!!

“Needs to be updated desperately!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Just got home from 2 nights at the Hotel Colorado & have to say that the only positive things about the hotel are the history of it and the location. The place is old, I get it BUT so is the Banff Springs Hotel & it is very well maintained & a superb hotel - the Hotel Colorado, not even close. The place smells mildewy, the rooms feel creepy and cramped and I couldn't bear to look at the ceilings at all - just beyond acceptable. Each night we found a multitude of dead bugs in our room, one window would not close and the temperature of the shower was luke warm at best.
Do yourself a favor & book at one of the newer hotels and simply pop into the Hotel Colorado for some history. Ugh - I am still cringing at the thought of that place!

We would like to thank you for choosing the Hotel Colorado. Apologies If your stay was not exceptional, we are aware of the problems you mentioned especially the luke warm water as our boiler did go out for some time leaving guests with minimal hot water. We are working hard to ensure that experience does not happen again. We strive to keep updating and renovating our Grand 119 year old establishment. We implore you to come back and give us another try to “Wow” you with our exceptional customer service and historic feel.

“Seriously old world including cold showers!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

If this review were based on location and lobby it would get a 4 or even a 5. it's centrally located in town and a quick walk to the hot springs. We stayed there during Christmas and they certainly go to town with the decorations. Not too tacky but decorative enough that you'll feel the Christmas spirit. Other than those two factors this hotel isn't a great stay.

We recently took a road trip from Los Angeles to Boulder, CO during the December holidays. We needed somewhere to stay for Christmas eve and an interstate hotel wasn't quite what we were looking for. We wanted somewhere festive and after some research Hotel Colorado seemed like it was going to fit the bill. The lobby has nice old world charm with big warm fireplaces, holiday decorations and pretty christmas trees. But this is where the niceness ends.

We first checked into our 2nd floor suite and made reservations for dinner for Christmas night. The room looked over a roof with some vents and seemed like the last update was back in 1980. It wasn't dirty but it wasn't kept very well either. When something is so old it's just hard to keep clean. It was quite depressing so I immediately went down to the front desk and they gave us a room on the 4th floor. It was a lot smaller but had a decent view of the Christmas lights outside. That night we hung out in the lobby and had a drink. The bartender was rude or overworked.

The next day was Christmas. We took freezing cold showers and started our day. I went down to the lobby and asked about the Glenwood Springs/Carbondale/Aspen area. We wanted to eat lunch somewhere and was told the entire town was shut down. The first guy admitted he didn't know much so he deferred to his co-worker who "knew Aspen". She also told us most of Aspen is closed and our only choice was to eat at the hotel restaurant. Since we had some great leftovers from a dinner last night at The Pullman (a restaurant in town) we ate that and went exploring for some snow. Much to our surprise just about everything was open in Aspen! We were extremely disappointed as we had missed lunch hour and drove back to the hotel for our Christmas dinner at the hotel.

Once we got back I asked if we could get room service since the didn't have any reservations until after 8. They said they couldn't since some people chose not to show up for work. That's clearly a situation that they couldn't help. I felt bad so took their offer of ordering food and brining it up myself to the room. The other wrench in the food situation is that my son has food allergies. They're pretty common allergies (peanuts and egg) and i spoke to the kitchen the day before to see if they could accommodate us. I always give people an option (or an out) in this situation. I say if they can't safely accommodate us it's ok but we need them to be honest. They said it wouldn't be a problem and they could make something simple like grilled chicken. When I mentioned this again the woman acted very surprised and didn't know how to help us. Not even sure if she understood what allergies meant. She also said that the kitchen makes no substitutions. We had no other place to go other than the gas station for food so I make the order simple by getting a grilled chicken with pasta no sauce for my son. It was on the menu but i just asked for them to not put the sauce on. An hour or so later I go downstairs to pick up the food and once we get upstairs the pasta has sauce on it. That's $71 later. At this point i'm too tired so our child goes to bed without dinner. Not the end of the world but not ideal either. They eventually comped us for his dish but secretly wished I had gone to the gas station to get our dinner.

The next day we take freezing cold showers again and leave as fast as we can. I know it's my fault for not reading the reviews but after so many people complain about cold showers in their reviews I'd do something about it. I know fixing old plumbing isn't easy or cheap but maybe they need to focus on spending money on the plumbing instead of the Christmas ornaments. I would also not recommend the restaurant. we spent about the same amount of money the night before at The Pullman and had an excellent dinner. The food at the hotel is barely edible, in fact terrible. Everything was overcooked and over salted.

I also think the staff isn't properly trained. They seem nice enough but if you're in the hospitality industry you should know your area and what's open and what's not during holidays. If your staff can't direct people or don't know the area then train them and make them get to know the area. I can't help but to think it was a ploy to stay and eat at their restaurant but I go back and forth on that one. Other than that we probably won't stay here ever again. We may come in for a drink and enjoy the lobby someday if we're ever back in the area.

“Married at the Hotel Colorado”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

We recently got married on New Year's Eve at the hotel and had impeccable service, food, and kindness from the staff and community in Glenwood. At the reception, the food was beyond gourmet, the bartender insanely kind and quick, and the in-house cake absolutely stunning. Our night went off without a hitch and we will both look back on it as an incredibly cherished memory.

The Hotel Colorado's history is one of its greatest attributes. Although it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a brand new hotel (it is over a hundred years old), if you spend a day or two traveling the halls, looking at the pictures of the hotel and Glenwood, and enjoying the ambiance, the place will absolutely grow on you.

Props to their astoundingly organized event coordinator, Christine Hamilton, and their general manager, who made a point to greet us and acknowledge our choice to have our wedding at his hotel. We can't thank them enough.

If you're looking for a place to hold your wedding, look no further. Truly, truly, truly they held the PERFECT event for us. Love, love, and more love for this hotel. We'll be back a thousand times, again and again (I am so pleased that we, too, will be a part of the long historical story of this place!).

Room Tip: We stayed in the bell tower penthouse and it was unbeatable for an indulgent trip!
