“not what expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

I was very excited to stay at this Hotel, but was a bit dissapointed with the rooms. I realize its suppose to be historic, but it can be updated and historic. The rooms and the bathrooms are small. The bathroom is very cold and the shower/tub was very small. It took forever to get hot water. There are no counters or hair dryers in the bathroom, just the old fashioned pedestal sink. The front desk however did give me a blow dryer. The closet in the room was bigger than the bathroom. The lobby is beautiful and it was decorated for Christmas. The best part of the Hotel is Barons Restaurant. We ate dinner and breakfast there and the food and service was fantastic and it is beautifully updated. We had massages in the basement at La Provence Spa and I will never do that again. The place looks like a second hand store, the rooms are tiny and there is no spa feeling there at all. The massage was good once I could get past the body odor and clammy hands of my male masseuse. Other than to eat at Barons we wont be going back!

“Really needs to be updated”

The lobby is great and the building is beautiful and the location is excellent... BUT the rooms are dirty, the beds are sinking in, the furniture in the rooms look like a film set from the 1970's, the shower in our room was clogged, so you had to stand in a bathtub full of water while showering, and every once in awhile the water would go from warm, to hot to scalding, to freezing and back. This place was so disappointing.

“Not what we expected.. :(”

Upon making our trip plans my husband and I did research online trying to determine the best place to take our family for Thanksgiving in the Colorado Rockies. We came to the conclusion that traveling to Glenwood Springs to enjoy the hot springs and stay at a historic hotel was the best choice. Unfortunately our stay was not exactly what we expected. First of all, our reservation was messed up. They gave us a downgraded room and we had to go back to the front desk to get a new room. Then we got into our room and it was very run-down. We paid for a "parlor room" which felt more like the "economy room." The carpet was stained and dirty, there was a tennis shoe from a previous guest under a chair (housekeeping forgot to look under it), and the bathroom just gross. The showers were lukewarm at best, and the radiators tapped and popped all night. Talk about creepy! The staff was very nice, and the bar area and restaurant were great, we just felt very dissappointed by the rooms. Food was delicious, and ambiance in restaurant made the trip. Sorry Hotel Colorado, we won't be coming back.

“This makes me sad...”

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times and this had to be the worst of them all. First of all, I love the history and ambiance of this grand hotel, however they have changed management and it is going down hill fast. I showed up on Thanksgiving with a reservation. There was one person to check guests in and out and I waited a very long time to have them misplace my reservation. Once found (they mixed up my first and last name), I was given a room on the second floor. YUCK! The carpet was old and stained, the bathroom floor tile was cracked and in disrepair, the radiators were dirty, the window sill were dirty. I can pay $100+ night for a clean place! The staff was nice but overwhelmed. There is no hairdryer, fridge or microwave, which is fine...for less $$. The worst part.....the hot water!!! Or lack of!!

I hope the management gets their act together, because this is a place I have loved for over 15 years. I have had some very nice stays there in the past...most recently 2 years ago. It was very disappointing to see such a wonderful place get so run down. I will visit, but not stay there again.

Room Tip: Get a room up high, otherwise you have drunken guests wandering the halls making lots of noise...and...

“Nice place, but couldn't sleep!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

This is very well-appointed hotel with comfortable rooms and a turn-of-the-century, that is the 19th century, lobby. Just ignore the hallways; they're gross! Packed with history and framed photos of its most famous guest, Teddy Roosevelt, this hotel is located right across the street from the Glenwood Hot Springs... location, location, location!!! I got an excellent room rate on "Hotwire" and enjoyed eating their breakfasts and one average dinner in the hotel restaurant! The food was good, but don't get the ribeye--not a good piece of ribeye--more like sirloin.

This is a very nice hotel, but if you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs since the old-fashioned radiators go bang--clank--bang--clank about once every hour. Instead of central air conditioning or a built-in room fan, there is a ceiling fan which helps somewhat and cheap plug-in fan in the closet if you need more white-noise to drown out all the interstate highway noises i.e. cars and frequent trucks using air brakes and the periodic train whistles! The nights are cool and heavenly in Glenwood so you will want that window open unless you are there in the dead of winter and once that window is open, all those noises enter in.

I am torn about whether or not I want to return! I love that old hotel, the history, location, the two large gas fireplaces, and yes, even the food, but if I am going to get a good night's sleep, I will need to go somewhere else!
