Obviously Colorado is home to some of the best ski resorts in the world.Â
Loveland, may be one of Colorado's best kept secrets. It certainly isn't a true
resort, but that's part of the reason it's great.Â
There are no condos on the property, no Ben&Jerry's in the lodge, no Starbucks
beside the parking lot, and no promotional megaphones at the bottom of the
lifts. Rather, it's a quiet, down to earth, skiers mountain.
In comparison to other resorts, Loveland may be a bit windier and colder, but
not by much. Parking is great! Much better than any other resort I have been
to... ever.... anywhere. We parked, walked a couple steps, bought our lift
tickets, and skied. The walk from the slopes to the car may have been 20 yards,
at the most. Plus, the mountain is 45 minutes from Golden/Lakewood and 10
minutes from Silverthorne/Dillon. Like many CO mountains, it is right off the
interstate.
Prices of the lift tickets are great. Loveland has several deals and bargains.
Search for a ticket on craigslist or a coupon in the area and save half the cost
of the lift ticket. Most other ski resorts have done away with their
promotional lift ticket offers. The worst coupon I saw was for a $40 ticket.
The only beef I had with Loveland was that their trails were not marked as well
as I would have liked. Loveland reminded my of Squaw in Tahoe. It was big
(almost 100 trails) and wide open.Â
If your a beginner or intermediate, stay on chairs 2, 3, and possibly 8. Chair
9 had the best expert terrain.
The bar/restaurant/cafeteria was very nice. You could watch skiers tumble down
the double blacks from your warm seat in the lodge.
I would not spend 5 days skiing Loveland, but I will always spend at least one
day skiing Loveland on any trip to Summit County. It's a great skier's
mountain.
