“Makes a great weekend trip”

The hotel is in a great location. Shops are within walking distance. Window views vary. Our view was of the mountain and McDonalds. We were checked in quickly. Various teas, scones and citrus water await guests at the front desk. The elevator is tiny, slow and smells bad. I recommend taking the stairs and enjoying the decor. The rooms have comfy beds and nice linens. If you need more space, I don't recommend staying here. You cannot expect the room sizes of modern hotels. Part of the fun is the novelty and that requires a little flexibility. Our bathroom was small with a shower. The size was adequate for our family of four. Room service has average prices. Our food was good, but burgers were a little under cooked for our preference. Coffee stations are available on each floor in the mornings. In addition to a complimentary breakfast on the first floor. The hotel hosts two restaurants. A hot tub can be reserved for 30minutes. We used it each night and enjoying being able to reserve it for our family alone. It has been well maintained. My only complaint is the bathroom. It could be remodeled without losing the history. The tiles look dirty.

“It was ok”

Stayed at the Strater in an interconnecting room with my family on our way to see Mesa Verde. The rooms are a bit on the too rustic side for me and felt very cramped. We asked for a rollaway for one of our kids and they provided a blow up mattress on the floor instead given the tight space. The showers require a deep knee bend for anyone over 6 feet tall. We did not eat at the hotel as we had other plans with friends in the area. Durango itself is a cool little town though and I think we might come back in the summer. The Strater is nicely located to walk about town and the train literally goes right by the hotel, which was fun for my kids. I doubt we would stay here again though.

“Great location and nice staff, but.....”

I should probably preface this by saying that I generally prefer more modern hotels. That said, I can appreciate the historic charm of the Strater. The common areas are quirky and fun, and the lounge off the lobby is lively and a great place to get a drink and enjoy the entertainment. That being said, our room was quite small, cluttered, and could have been a bit cleaner, particularly the bathroom. If you are a fan of historic hotels it is probably worth giving it a shot, but if you prefer something that doesn't feel like a movie set from 100 years ago I'd probably pass on the Strater.

Room Tip: Could be a lot of street noise on the weekends when the bars get out if you are in a room at the fro...

“Skip the Chains and Stay in this Classic.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

This classic hotel smack in downtown Durango is a treasure. They've obviously invested a LOT of money in its renovation over the years. The decor is a bit over the top, a kind of eclectic mix of classic and contemporary. Get a handle on the wallpaper-er! They're out of control!
Continental Breakfast is included and is fair to good. Coffee is excellent, biscuits are flabby and gravy out of a tub. Go across the street for breakfast.
Front desk help is excellent. Location can not be beat for kicking around downtown Durango. Stay here instead of the chains. You will love it.

Room Tip: Get the classic queen, and ask for a room NOT under the stairs nor over the bar.

“My favorite place in Duango”

Strater Hotel has all the charm of an old historic hotel to make a stay in Durango perfect. This was our third stay in four years. We got a great last minute deal on a room with a queen bed on the fourth floor. No coffee pot in the room, but we found coffee and tea (great tasting coffee too) set up at the end of the hallway at 6:30 am. Water pressure in bath was not great, but the charm of the hotel, the location right down town, and the included breakfast (great Posole!) is worth very minor inconveniences . This hotel is truly worth an excellent rating. The building is just beautiful.
