“Charming with a few glitches”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

Overall, I would say we enjoyed out stay at this hotel, even with a few glitches. The hotel has a very inviting lobby that makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. The check-in process was very easy and the front desk attendant was very friendly. The room was comfortable and had all the amenities and fixtures of a mid-scale hotel.

As other reviews have stated, the elevator was a bit tricky to enter, especially with luggage, but it was an authentic, turn-of-the-century piece that added charm to the experience.

The two negatives of the stay were the breakfast and the hotel's noise issues. As other reviews have stated, the breakfast was a bit disappointing. The selection was very poor and there seemed to be a problem replenishing items as they got low. We came down to breakfast around 9am and there was nothing left. There were only 4 or 5 others having breakfast at that time so the breakfast attendant couldn't have been that busy. I ended up having to go to Starbucks across the street just to get some coffee.

The other negative was the noise. Because this building is quite old, the walls are paper-thin. In addition, the door to our room wasn't a standard hotel-style door. It was a simple bedroom door that had a deadbolt added to it. Because of this, you could hear every single little noise coming from the hallway. Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep during our stay.

In summary, this hotel has a lot of charm and the staff is friendly. Just don't expect much for breakfast and bring your earplugs for sleeping.

Room Tip: There is a French Bistro with an amazing breakfast right across the street. Spend the extra money t...

“Very comfortable, love the period ambiance.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

This is a great place to stay. I love the furniture, comfy bed, Keurig Coffee, decent storage, and even a teddy bear for the bed. Our room had a great TV, too, if you're staying in for the night. The internet works well and there is a small business area in the front. There is plenty to do in Durango and this hotel is situated close to everything, including the Silverton/Durango Train. You can here the train's whistle from the room. Oh, the customer service is quite good as well. I'd definitely stay here again.

“A step back in history and a step away from a historic viewpoint.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

The General Palmer Hotel is the gateway to one of the very best for, if nothing else, it's convenience. Fortunately, it's also extremely good for its historic charm. The place was probably a rehabbers nightmare. Everything is as it was at the turn of the century. Not this one, the one before this one. Imagine, revitalizing all that stuff. All of it. Even the elevator. All the brass stuff. The rooms are charming. Everything that could have been saved to keep the authenticity had been restored. A wise architect chose to update the plumbing, at least the look is the same period. New wiring, safety amenities, et al. Smart, and chick. Charming at the least in the rooms, but then you venture to the areas around the Hotel. Breakfast is served every morning in an elegantly decorated area on the first floor, just steps from the front desk. The front dest is another marvel of history revisited. The breakfast, which they call Continental, is very much like the rehab of this place. Top of the line. Nothing served on anything but china, specially make from the historic era of this place, in period. The coffee, Hot Water for Tea, Creamer, and Milk is all in period Silver serving sets with titles on each item describing what it is inside. If the outside left you any doubt it was being served by the best service, the inside left no doubt that it is what the presentation perceived you should believe. Liquid refreshment notwithstanding, the main faire, and every morning it was different, took the idea of "Continental" to a whole new, and rehabbed level. The food, like the rest of the place, made you feel welcome. Every evening there would be homemade cookies and milk, tea, coffee. The breakfasts were scrambled eggs, sausage, oatmeal, cranberry scones, blueberry, strawberry, and/or blackberry jams in individual glass containers, that begged to be palmed for a "revisit" when you came home a week or a month later. On top of all this is an ample parking area, great grounds with beautiful flowers, iron fencing, and gardens, right next door to one of the greatest attractions on the planet: The Durango / Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The word "Scenic" should have a picture of both of these icons next to it. The train is a ball. Worth every penny. And it was sweet to have a great place to stay right in the heart of all that Durango offers, with fabulous surroundings, at a very, very, good value.

Room Tip: We were on the third floor and everything was great. The elevator is period authentic so: it's v...

“Double Booked President's Suite”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

My friend and I went to Durango last weekend mainly to stay in the Presidential Suite that he had reserved and had the confirmation sheet to prove it. We arrive to find that it had been
double booked and were given another reservation that was made by the General Manager
herself in a regular queensize room. We were NEVER notified of this change and she was no
where to be found ..and it was a weekend. We waited a very long time and decided to take the queen room being we were tired but very disappointed.
Bad move on GM's part and found the absence of any superior dysfunctional. Did she think we would just say "Oh OK"? She finally returned the frontdesk's desperate call the last day to ok free room as compensation.......

Room Tip: Presidential Suite if they don't double book it and you get in!

“Great stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

Location is great and staff was very friendly. The hotel is decorated quite nicely and the beds are very comfortable. The rooms are stocked with the little items you sometimes forget when traveling which was very nice. The cookies in the lobby are a great treat. The only drawback was the tiny little elevator. It adds to the charm but it can bet quite tricky manuvering in and out of there with a suitcase!
