“As hostels go...this one is below average...I would avoid”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2010

This hostel seems to have a good location near some bars, coffee houses and restaurants which is the advantage of this location. Another advantage is the hostel and the coffeehouse nearby both have free wi-fi. However, when compared to other hostels, this one is below average. Let me go through the reasons categorically:

- Its definately not a clean place to reside. I never saw any cleaning crews. The bathroom and dorm area was very dirty. I did see small rodents and ants.

- Some of the people staying in the hostel were not students . There were quite a few long-term residents who were using the hostel as low-income housing until they found work. One guy told me that he was paying 100 dollars a week as part of the long term housing plan. One of the guys I was talking to claimed to have been incarcerated at one point in time which made me run to the local drugstore for a lock and cable to secure my bag.

- When I arrived at the hostel, I could not find management. The only way I knew which bunk was mine from a note they left on the bed. For 2 days, I kept going to the office to find it empty. Finally, one day I went in and found they were there. I informed them I decided to leave one day early, but they said they had to charge me for that extra day because "rules were rules" and the cancellation policy was "in the paperwork". I have stayed at many hostels and had to leave a day early on a few occasions. Every hostel except for this one was flexible. Every hostel I have stayed in had management on site during regular hours, but this one seemed to lack management.

- The hostel lacked a common area for the hostellers to gather and congregate. There was no television room which is commonplace in other hostels.

- The beds were uncomfortable and noisy. On my first night there, the guy above me rocked the bed so hard I thought there was an earthquake.

I have rated this hostel one star as its not really a hostel, but more of a low income housing. The management was horrible. The place was not clean. No common areas. My advice is to avoid this hostel if at all possible.

“Bare bones. Not just a hostel- others live there, too.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2009

The place is very basic. It is a two storied facility that appears to be half-hostel, half-boarding home/apartment since there were people there who lived there "long term." The rooms were very basic, with bunk beds made of pine wood and others metal. The hostess the night I arrived was very courteous and helpful. The house is in a busy, active neighborhood with lots of restaurants and bands and bars. If you are wanting a silent, restorative place, look past this one. If you don't care about silence or venues, then this place may work if you are on a budget. The people there were mature and kind. The facility itself is quite old and needs considerable restoration.

Not bad by any means, but very, very basic. They charged me 25 bucks, and I think 15 would have been more appropriate. I give it a "C."

“Much better than a hotel!”

Myself and three friends reserved a room in the hostel but were (by the luck of the draw) instead placed in the guest house. This was an awesome experience. The owner was more than helpful, even driving us around Denver and hooking us up with coupons and valuable tips and information. Not to mention, her great granddaughter who lives there with her is absolutely adorable! She told us to "make ourselves at home" and it truly felt like that. Our vacation was that much more memorable largely due to this wonderful hostel.

“Hostel of the Rockies”

I stayed at the hostel for 5 days in late April and enjoyed my time there. Its in a nice quiet, residential location yet is still very close to many restaurants, bars, great public transportation, and is minutes away from downtown Denver. The owner and staff were very friendly and helpful and the other guest were great company. As a female traveling alone i felt safe in the neighborhood as well as the hostel itself. The place can get a bit messy at times but certainly not enough to be a deal breaker and i would gladly stay there again if im ever back in Denver.
