“Great Price, VERY clean, Comfortable room”

Just returned from a CO road trip that we tried to make affordable. Did some camping in other towns, but while in Crested Butte decided to try this hostel. It was GREAT! The shared unisex bathrooms and private room were very comfortable and very clean. There is a big common room on the main floor with a television, several large tables and a full kitchen. We chose to eat our breakfast at the hostel to save a little money--and then were able to find many reasonably priced restaurants in town. The location of the hostel is PERFECT! We rode our bikes or walked into town daily, the hostel is just blocks away from many hiking, biking trails, and parks. What a perfect place to stay when trying to save a little money--and have a great location!!

“Great hostel, great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2010

I stayed in a private room at the hostel, which was about three times the price of a dorm-style room. The room was a good value in a resort area, and the rooms and bathroom were reasonably clean (could have been better). The facility was quite at night, included free wi-fi, laundry facility next door, kitchen facilities, BBQ, and a very helpful front desk staff. Overall, it was a very adequate place to stay while mountain biking in the area for several days.

“Great deal considering location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2009

I have been coming to CB for 15 years, and my parents have been visiting since the late 60's. Housing is far from a bargain in this town, but when you consider the ammenites the town has to offer, we keep coming back. My fiancée an I were in town planning our wedding for next fall and to hike. Given that our trip was planning on how to spend our money next fall, our goal for this short wknd excursion was to stay cheap. We stayed in the first floor private bath room and found it to be adequate. If the bedspread and shower curtain were newer, this room would be excellent. We did not see the mold in the shower as one of the other reviewers claimed. There was dark tile and dark grout, but no mold. There was a little bit on the shower curtain, however I didn't consider it to be a big issue. Considering some of the hostels I have stayed at in Europe, the was really clean. There is a considerable fan noise adjacent to the room, however it never bothered our sleeping.

Yes, it is more expensive than comparably equipped hostels in other parts of the country (or world) however it is probably the most affordable housing option in Crested Butte.

“It was OK, best for people who are not light sleepers”

I stayed in a private room on the ground floor (the only one with a private bath). At first glance everything looked fine, but after a closer look, the bathroom needs a good scrubbing - there was mold or mildew growing on the tub walls (the tiles and grout are both grey and the mildew/mold is a darker grey that wasn't immediately obvious). I could hear every step in the room above me, so I ended up moving to one of the private rooms on the second floor that shares the bathroom (where there was also some mold/mildew). As others have said, this hostel does have a lot of rules, although they did refund me the difference in price after I moved to the less expensive room, although the rules say no refunds so YMMV.

The hostel is on the edge of town, so the only thing right by the hostel is the Gas Cafe (gas station/convenience store/fast food). But Crested Butte isn't that big of a town so it is easy enough to walk to the center of town. The hostel is near the road that connects Crested Butte to Gunnison and Mt. Crested Butte (the ski resort) - traffic noise wasn't usually an issue although I was woken up one night by a truck going by. The main noise issue was from people who didn't heed the signs to not slam the doors.

Apparently there is bakery that operates out of the back of the hostel, so sometimes you could smell stuff being baked, which is a good thing or a bad thing based on your perspective. They would have a few baked goods for sale sometimes in the afternoon.

The kitchen and living room are nice sized - I was there Fall 2007 so that was not a peak time so I don't know how busy/crowded the kitchen could be during busier times.

There is a laundry on premises - wash was a $1.75, I think the dryers were 25 cents/5 minutes and the soap was $1. There is a computer available but there is a charge. I don't know what it costs - the library is near the hostel and has free internet service. You don't have to belong to the library but there is a maximum time limit of 30 minutes.

“It's clean, there is a bed, but for $38 a night. . . . . . . .”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2006

This place is the biggest rip off I had seen from any hostel ever! So I had been to at least 6 hostels in Colorado, this one was pretty cozy. I've also traveled to probably 30 different hostels in N. America. This one is much better than some of the others. But my conclusive report of this hostel is this. FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE, unless you are not living on a budget. At $38 a night, most would expect a little more than just a bed to sleep on at night with one pillow and a blanket. And there are no weekly rates, yeah, you have to pay $266 for a freakin' week to share a room with snorers. Good luck trying to convince the owner. Hell I'm sure you could find any hotel with cable tv and private bath on the highway for less than 30 a night. But I suppose that since you are in this great ski town which has the reputation of not being one of those high class overpriced ski resorts, you should have to pay the price. Well I've been in those overpriced ski resorts and still stayed at a hostel for under $28. Sure you are really out of the way from a hotel anywhere around here. But let's look at the math. If three of you wanted to stay here for one night, you're looking at over $100. That is unheard of in the hostel world. Also did I mention there is no breakfast (not even a piece of bread), and no free coffee in the morning, who had ever heard of charging such outrageous prices for not even a cup of coffee in the morning. Here is my advice, go to couchsurfing.com, find someone in the area and crash on their couch, because prices like this hostel are outrageously stupid. Overall, I must say this hostel is clean, close to the bus stop and quiet. But for $38 a night, (---) it, I'm staying in Gunni, or sleeping in my car because this is just plain robbery. So yes, I was actually quite dissatisfied. By the way I stayed in a hostel that was cleaner than this one in NYC, that was across the street from Central Park, and had access to the subway one block away, and only paid $18 a night, now that was a deal, this place is a thievery. Also they charge $2 a bowl of cereal.
