We stayed at this hotel during a family vacation to Colorado and Arizona. Of the 9 different hotels in which we stayed--which (on paper) were in a class comparable to this hotel--we would rate this #8. Compared to where we COULD have stayed in Colorado Springs, however, it has to rate slightly above average.
In tourist places in the western U.S. there are often three distinct classes of hotels--which date from different eras. There are the "grand hotels"--which date from the railroad era of the 1880s-1920s, the "motor court motels" of the 1930s-1950s, the "meeting and conference center hotels" of the 1960s-80s, and the "corporate business/destination traveller" hotels of the 1990s-the present. Many Quality Inns were built as part of the current hotel era, but increasingly the chain seems to have become associated with older "meeting and conference center hotel" properties that probably belonged to another chain at one time, and that Quality Inn has purchased and has tried to refashion to look like a newer hotel.
What struck us was that when we drove up, it looked great . . . and when we went into the lobby, it looked great . . . but once we headed back into the area with the rooms, it was like we had stepped back in time at least two decades. (You actually have to go along a connecting breezeway between the two areas and through fire doors . . . so this accentuates the differences between the public areas and the sleeping accommodations.) Our room was adequate--although two of the lamps didn't work . . . one didn't even have a bulb. The beds were bedbug free. The fridge was clean but had an odd smell to it. The internet was a bit dodgy--I couldn't get a connection after following the directions. I called the front desk about it and the person I spoke to said that they didn't handle this issue, and gave me an 800 number to call. I was able to get connected after some coaching--the instructions provided in the room weren't very good.
We slept reasonably well, but in the morning learned that the car parked next to ours in the parking lot had been broken into in the night. When we went up to breakfast we saw the owner at the desk giving the manager "what for" . . . and while she was being gracious about this and tried to assure him that things like this didn't happen very often at their property, the hotel assumed no liability. I felt bad for the guy, but what can you do? As for breakfast--it was excellent. Full hot breakfast buffet, good quality, and lots of wait staff ready to clean tables to make way for the next batch of guests as they filter in from their rooms.
Our only real complaints about the hotel were that the carpeting in the room hallways smelled musty like it had been flooded at one time, and that the laundry operated on limited hours and was somewhat dirty. For us, however, the locations was really good--about 15 minutes from the attractions we wanted to see (Cave of the Winds, Academy Riding Stables, Garden of the Gods, Flying W Ranch, Manitou Springs, etc.)
Despite how friendly the management was and how good the overall service seemed to be I still think we could have done better for the same price. I don't think we would stay here again. The hotel isn't completely what it advertises itself to be . . . again, public areas = great; rooms = need some work!
