I'll start with the good. Great location. 1 block to Main Street and across the street from 4 O clock run. Access to skiing is great from the hotel. Nice that they have a heated outdoor pool and hottubs. However the water in the hottub by the pool was disgusting- greenish puke color (not quite what you hope to be relaxing in- we just hoped there was enough chlorine in there to kill whatever was making the water look like that!!). Pool water was clean and pool was a nice temp.
Bar/ Lounge has good drink deals and is a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
Now for the bad. When we checked out, I accidentally left my purse in the room (I had put it behind a chair in the room and rarely carry a purse, so I just simply forgot about it). The hotel had my husband's cell # which they did try to call, however, he didn't check his messages all day. I figured out the next day that I didn't have my purse and called the hotel. They said they would send it to me the next day UPS (I paid the UPS fee, which I would expect). I had 4 $100 bills in a pocket in my purse and those were missing when I got it back. Quite honestly, I fully expected the cash to be missing. In fact, I told 5 or 6 friends about leaving my purse there (they knew I had the cash in there because they thought it was funny that I was saving this money from a trip I had taken to Vegas because I was convinced the money was lucky, so I wasn't spending it) and told all of them that I would be shocked but incredibly pleasantly surprised if the cash was still there. Had the cash been in there, I would be writing the opposite of this on tripadvisor- I would be singing the hotel's praises about how incredibly honest all of their staff is.
I called the hotel immediately to let them know that my cash was missing. I spoke with Jessie at the front desk, who sounded really upset about it. More than once he said how they are a small hotel with not many employees and he was really upset thinking someone there might be that dishonest. He said that he would have a manager get in touch with me. A manager did call the next day and she pretty much said that it was definitely not one of her employees, that she fully trusts them all. And that it must be the person who packed it up at the UPS store. The UPS store though has a security camera and they can prove that it wasn't them.
I fully realize that it was pretty stupid of me to leave my purse at the hotel. Okay really stupid even :) But, I stay at a lot of hotels, and often leave valuables in my room (again probably stupid, but honestly I've never had anything stolen.) I will say that I am happy that whoever it was, only stole my cash. I also had a camera in there with probably 500 photos on it that I hadn't downloaded to my computer. I would have been far more upset if my camera was what was missing. Cash can be replaced, but the photos can't.
My biggest issue with this situation is the fact that the manager I spoke with was so nonchalant about the situation and was so adamant that her employees are all very honest and she trusts them all. I know if I were an employee of a hotel and I stole something from a guest, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't admit to it. Pretty good way to get yourself fired and be out of a job. But as this manager, I would think she ought to be concerned that she has someone dishonest working for her.
Who knows though, maybe she figures most guests aren't stupid enough to leave $400 in cash sitting wide open in their purse? So, maybe she figures it isn't something she'll have to worry about too often. And even if it happens again to someone else, she will again just deny that it could have possibly been one of her employees.
Sorry for the long review, I just wanted to give all the details about what happened to me and my experience at River Mountain Lodge. This was my second stay there and I have to admit, prior to this experience, I would have come back over and over (mostly because of the easy ski-in and easy access to town). After the way this was handled though by management, I could never stay here again. I would have thought the least I would get was an apology. I wasn't expecting to get my money back or even get a night of my stay comped, but an apology would have been nice. But I guess that would be admitting wrong doing of one of your employees.
I'd say, stay here because of the location. But be sure not to leave anything valuable in your room, especially cash. I would be worried about anything valuable personally, only because I think once someone starts stealing, they may not stop at just cash next time.
