My husband and I travel on short trips quite frequently, and our preference is always a bed/breakfast, or an inn such as the Allaire Timbers Inn. While the ambience and decor are quite beautiful, there was some disappointing factors about it. The big difference is that, unlike nearly a 100% of the B-Bs/inns at which we have stayed, the innkeepers are not on site. Although they are listed as the innkeepers, Kendra and Sue are not on site -they are actually nowhere to be found and they have hired others to do the cooking, customer service, etc. The inn caters to adult couples and we were amazed to find that one of the onsite staffers was a teenager!! As adults who have raised kids, or adults who are there are to "get away" having a rather impersonable teenager represent the business is not a good move. Casey, while pleaseant enough, never spoke unless spoken to and her hospitality at breakfast was slim to say the least. When we set down, we were never asked what we wanted, etc. We had to ask her to serve us, to refill the empty pitchers, etc. One day, we came down later than our normal 8 am time, and the strawberry bread that was posted as being served was already out!!! When we asked Casey, she just kind of grunted and stated that she was already out. Really? It was more like a scaled up Holiday Inn Express for breakfast as a result - self serve plain bagels, instant oatmeal. Extremely disappointing. The LAST day on our four day stay that we were there the other onsite staffer, Theresa, was there and it was a 180 degrees different. She greeted us whenever we walked into the inn, at breakfast, she was immediately asking us if we wanted to be served, she was refilling the pitchers, etc. w/out being asked and she made more than enough breakfast to serve all adults there, with leftovers! It was what we had expected for the first three days that we were there! Also, Theresa is knowledgable about the area and could provide information about such things as shopping, trails, etc., which is critical when you have visitors who are not from the area. Casey, (the teenager), is from Maine, and working at the Inn is basically a means to her end - to be a skim bum in Breckenridge, and she is absolutely not knowledable about the activities, the area, etc. When I heard her give absolutely wrong advice to an out of town couple about the drive to Denver, I was amazed. We actually pulled the couple aside later on and gave them the correct information Also, the inn is self-serve in so many ways. When our trash got full after the first day, we had to hunt for a place to empty it on our own as there was no one around on site to ask where we could empty it, there is no maid service, so that meant making our bed every day, fresh towels only if you ask if it's before day 3 - all the stuff that I do on my own at home anyway, and something that I was hoping to get away from, especially for $135/night!! (There's even a key drop box right by the door to drop your keys in when you leave - no one to thank you for your business/stay, which, again, is the standard that we are use to.) If the inn could have knowledgable, hospitable, and mature staff onsite, rather than a teenager, and have that person be onsite for longer periods of time, it would go along way to moving this from a basically average stay to a very good to excellent stay.
