“We've been here before, we'll be here again.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2010

We love coming back to this place for our annual family get-together. We've stayed there three times, always near Thanksgiving. We always get the suite with the kitchenette, sitting area, and extra bedroom. Yes, it's a bit rustic, and yes, it's old, but we love the place and the grounds, which are neat and clean. The owners are very responsive, and it's so convenient to Boulder. It's a heck of a bargain when you consider you can cook your own food there instead of eating out. Staying here made me feel like I was back in mid-century America, traveling the mother road.

It's not as tight and modern as other hotels, but it has everything we needed, and very worth the price, which I considered reasonable for a suite this large, this convenient to town and yet in a quiet, more rural location.

My only change would be that I wish the hot tub was open year-round. I love sitting in a hot-tub in the snow.

“Stay away from this tourist trap!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2010

We recently stayed at the "lodge" for one night only, and that was because we could not take it for another night (we booked it for 5 nights total). First, this place is nothing more than a run down, creepy, old motel. The website is very, very misleading. Can you "hike" out the back door of your room? Sure, straight up a trail to nowhere. Can you "fish" in their stream area out front? Sure, but you have to pay...per fish...which is ridiculously absurd. Is town within walking distance? NO WAY...about 6 miles of canyon away. Is it within biking distance? Yeah, down hill...if you want to come back, get ready for a 40 minute ride. Are the rooms anything but dingy, damp, old, and just plain gross? No, they are all of the above. We had a "Full kitchen" on our reservation...which turned out to be a 1970's microwave and mini fridge??? Also, we had a room that had a closet door between the people next to us, which may as well have been a piece of paper as it was so thin and uncomfortable. For that matter, the door may as not have been there as you could actually SEE THROUGH IT! Honestly, I don't know how this "lodge" could ask guests to pay more than $50/night. There are absolutely no ammenities, there is no view, and the website does it absolutely no justice for how poor it is. I must say the man at the front desk (I believe it is family owned) was very cordial, understood our complaints and refunded out last 4 nights given how unhappy we were, so at least that was nice of him. Nonetheless, they still got us for $140 the first night in the Bates Motel. Even if he hadn't, we were ready to leave after day 1 and just eat the loss as their cancellation policy is also a crazy tourist trap. Read the fine print (that just so happens to not be on their site, but only on the confirmation email after you book - cancel 3 days prior to your stay, or 3 days prior to leaving - so technically you are stuck once you get there). We were able to get a 4 star hotel in town...for $50 less per night!!!
We are not city slickers here, so don't want this review to be misconstrued. I'd rather of stayed in a tent, or my rental car for that matter. Honestly, I can't see a scenario I'd recommend this place, period. Stay away! Any other review otherwise I just can't imagine as being a real person who actually stayed there.

“Not what we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

Location, location, location - Boulder Mountain Lodge is about 5 minutes outside of Boulder if there were no traffic lights. It's a 20 minute drive from the lodge to 28th street. There is no cell phone service at Boulder Mountain Lodge. You can make only local phone calls from the phone in the room.

We reserved a small kitchenette and believe me, it was small. The TV was small and hard to hear and made fuzzy noises. There is a list of DVDs that are available to watch, but you have to select the movie and let the front office know which one it is. Then, the movie is played through the main office on one channel throughout all rooms. Better make your selection fast or you may be watching a movie you don't want to watch! As far as free wireless internet goes - you have access to it, but as soon as you're done, they ask you to sign off so other guests can use it.

For nearly $500 for 5 nights, you do not pay for what you get. The website neglects to inform you that they have no air conditioning. It was 90 degrees when we were there and their standing fan does NOT cool the room down nearly enough. Most of the people staying at the lodge had all their windows and doors open even at 8pm.

Bugs, bugs, and more bugs. If you don't want to worry about killing bugs in your room, this is not the place the stay.

The bathroom was TINY with no fan for taking showers or using the restroom. There is barely any countertop space so it's hard to spread out even with two people. Faucets are old....carpet is dingy. I didn't want to walk on the carpet in bare feet.

The staff is friendly and willing to work with us so we could check out and move elsewhere to stay for the remainder of our trip. Note that 10pm is "quiet time" there. The hottub and pool are only open until 10pm.

“Perfect for a White Christmas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2009

We are here and it is snowing. This of no consequence, the room is warm, the"N" bus runs us to Boulder and the Hot Tub was great last night as the snow fell.

Front room is a great sitting and reading room. (There is also a reading room in the main building also) We wanted country, rustic, and out of the way but close to Boulder and this place delivers!

Timed our arrival with the snow, and all worked put well. DIA to within 500 feet of the lodge was 12 bucks a person and worked nicely.

Staff is informative, walkway up to the suite is magically shoveled whenever we go out. It has been snowing for more than a day and it just keeps coming.

Quiet, Quait, South Beach it Aint, Perfect!

“Cozy, warm and friendly...”

Not w/in walking distance, but close enough to downtown Boulder to be convenient, yet very nestled away from all the hubbub. This is not a 4 star place, but provided all the necessities to make our stay very enjoyable, including a decent continental breakfast and wifi. We'd definitely stay there again. Considered camping there, but after a long drive from Chicago, needed a soft mattress. Camping did not look like the best way to go though - right off of the parking lot, early morning/late night arrivees (a la headlights) would have definitely been a bad thing.
