“You get what you pay for...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2011

The Railway Inn is certainly very reasonable and has a great location. It's difficult to find places in Yountville where a two night minimum isn't required. However, I think part of the cost savings is due to the lack of staff and antiquated water heating system. Someone called to confirm our reservation, which I appreciated, and they certainly have a lot of signage directing you to pick up your key from the fitness center, so checking in wasn't a problem. The railcar itself was fairly clean, but I felt pretty cold most of the time. We turned on the heat immediately (the air conditoning was on...in February?), and it did an okay job of heating up the room, but didn't quite make it into the bathroom. The real issue I had with was with the dangerously spotty water temperature and pressure. When you're cold to begin with, there's nothing worse than stepping into a warm shower and having the water pressure drop and turn frigid. My husband was shrieking while trying to avoid getting scalded or turning to ice. I got to the point where I wondered if I should take a shower at an off time.

Due to the inconsistent (and sometimes non-existent) water pressure and temperature, I woudn't stay here again. There didn't seem to be any point reporting this to anyone, as the front desk was closed when we left, as well.

“I got to sleep in a caboose!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2011

CHARMING! This was a real find. In the heart of Yountville. Steps from terrific restaurants, art and shops. The caboose was so cute and comfortable that we didn't want to leave our room.

“Great location in Yountville, great price, would return..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2010

This place was a great find...Room was large, long and clean. It is also one of kind, being that it is an old rail car. The inn is connected to a small boutique mall, which is filled with quaint shops, the rear of the mall is Bortega, wonderful restaraunt. There are a total of 15 bar and restaraunts within a 2 blocks radius of the inn. Including French Laundry and Bouchon Bakery. Really neat town, also check out the Gerard tasting room. If you cant a chance take a walk behind the inn, you will find a long pathway taking you behind a few neighboring resorts, really nice. Domain Chandon is a 2 minute drive as well. This is the best place to stay in Yountville.

“Great location, Amazing Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

My wife recently stayed at the Inn for her birthday. What a great find! It is a great no frills, cozy inn for a fraction of the price of it's neighboring hotels/inns. We were shocked at the low cost and amazing location. A stone's throw from Bottega and a short drive to vineyards. If you are looking for over the top service & spas you won't find it here. However if you want a quaint, quiet, clean place to stay while you visit all that Napa has to offer...this is the spot for you.

“Don't expect much but location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

Frequently stay in Yountville for its central valley location and great dining in walking distance, but couldn't find a room for less than $400/nt. I had walked by the Railway Inn many times and they had a "railcar" available for $125. No brainer. Just understand what you're getting. A quaint rooms that's a railcar, with very limited service if you need help. Office was closed when I went to check in at 6:15, and my key was with the health club next door. There's a small sign that each room has its own circuit breaker, but good luck finding it if the lights are out. I didn't experience any problems and I didn't expect much, so I was quite satisfied with my stay. The bed was fine but not exceptional, the tv only had 10 channels which I found odd and yes, as others have noted, the skylights were a mess. The showerhead was quite low (as was the pressure) requiring me to bend over to wash what little hair I have. But the location was just what I wanted. If a hotel's website isn't very interactive or have many pictures, you shouldn't be surprised by what you find.
