“A perfect fit for us!”

We arrived at Windrose Romantic Cottages after four full, and hectic, days in San Francisco. Could not have found a better place to relax, unwind, and enjoy. Karen and Byron are welcoming hosts and, as other reviewers have noted, they have gone to great lengths to meet all our needs. At checkin we covered the basics with Karen and Byron walked us to, and through, The Garden Cottage.

The cottage was quaint, homey, and perfect for our visit. The woodstove was heating the cottage nicely (quite cool during our visit), music was playing, and fresh cut dogwood blooms were in a vase on the table. The bathroom was stocked full of (many) freshly laundered towels and everything one would need. The kitchen had apple and orange juices, along with milk as well as some delicious fruit bread, bananas, and oranges. All the needed equipment was located in the galley kitchen as well as coffee, tea, hot chocolate mix, and a delicious waffle mix (that was yummy!!). Karen had also provided us with info on two local grocery stores - that we visited to purchase more food stuffs for breakfast and a picnic lunch.

Karen frequently updates a great binder full of local information and is more than happy to help out if you have questions. There were numerous music cds, games, books, and a TV for entertainment; all the accessories needed to enjoy a bottle of wine; an iron and ironing board for touchups; a blow dryer; and even some bath salts for a long soak in the huge tub.

The Windrose Romantic Cottages are perfectly located to visit all the wineries in Sonoma county. We enjoyed visits to Healdsburg Square, Korbel (fun free tour and samples), Coppola (beautiful place with movie memorabilia), and four other wineries. We had a delicious lunch at Rustic (at Coppola's) as well as an enjoyable happy hour and relaxed dinner at Patterson's Pub in Windsor. We had hoped to make a visit to Fort Ross but, due to the budget cuts, it was closed during the week. :-( We took a drive out to US 1...loved our visit to Armstrong Woods (take at least the one mile hike!), the drive along the beach, and a stop in Bodega Bay.

Can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our visit, 'our' cottage, and our retreat from daily life. When we return to the area we'll stay at Windrose!!

“A hidden gem”

A hidden gem and will be our new home away from home. Karen & Byron have thought of everything, from the music, fresh flowers, shampoo & body wash. Also breakfast items such as muffins, belgian waffles w/butter & syrup, fruit, raisin bread, cereal/milk and the wonderful orange-blueberry bread. Loved the binder with things to do, restaurants, etc. Many new places since I left the area so local suggestions were very helpful. All we can say is this place rocks!

“We loved it”

We stayed in the French Cottage for 5 nights last week and we loved it. There were so many nice little thoughtful details about the place that I won't even try to list them. And it was immaculately clean. "Immaculate" is a strong word I know, but seriously I don't think there was a speck of dirt anywhere.

“Welcoming, Comfortable & Central Location to wineries!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

When we arrived, it was as though Karen & Byron were waiting for long lost relatives to arrive! They greeted us at the door, Karen quickly checked us in, handed us a packet of coupons and maps and said that Byron would meet us at the cottage to show us around. We got to the cottage and Byron was waiting with relaxing music to welcome us to the bright cheery English cottage! The cottage is comfortably set up with a sitting area, kitchen & bed with a separate bathroom.

Other Inns could definitely take a lesson from these folks when it comes to the continental breakfast. There was a box of cereal, packets of oatmeal, homemade blueberry/orage bread, english muffins, waffle maker w/mix coffee, juice & milk. Everything you need for a week of breakfasts! And we never had to leave the room!

There was a nice fruit and cheese plate waiting for us in the frig....along with our own person PLUM orchard outside the door. We LOVED picking & eating the plums all week...thanks Karen & Byron!

These cottages are located just far enough off the highway to be in the "country" (we loved being gently wakened each morning by the rooster & goats at the nearby farm!)...but close enough for easy access. Only 10-15 minutes from nearby Geyserville, Healdsburg and ALL the wineries! Couldn't be a better location!

I believe we saw somewhere that you get a bottle of wine to choose from...if this is important to you, you may have to ask for it! We didn't get one...but It definitely is not a show stopper for us. If our travels ever bring us back to the area, we will be staying at Windrose again...without a doubt!!

“A Welcoming Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2010

There is nothing about the Windrose Romantic Cottages that wasn't stunning, comfortable, welcoming, and relaxing. We left blustery, snowy and freezing Chicago to the rainy season of No. California and it was still paradise. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by Karen and Byron who gave us our keys, told us that they were available if we needed them, and invited us to choose a bottle of red, white or blush wine from a local winery. When we stepped into the French Cottage which would be our little home away from home for the next week, I melted. The fireplace is the source of heat for the cottage and works wonderfully. We were most excited about the full size kitchen because we were eager to cook us some locally grown foods for meals. The kitchen is stocked with spices, cereals, tea and coffee and cooking utensils as well as a waffle iron with Karen's own mix...which was wonderful to wake up to! Then Byron opened the fridge and there was a fruit and cheese plate and an assortment of juices and milk too! Oh did I mention the lemon tree out front that we made salads and sauces with? "Help yourself" Byron said. The love never ceased...

The bed was so comfortable - I felt like I was swallowed every night by the feathertop bed and multiple down comforters and pillows. There was ample room to unpack our things and feel at home. I am not a hot tub person, but I spent every single night in this hot tub sipping on champagne and white wine listening to the rain, the geese, gazing at the stars and the moon, absolutely captivated by the peacefulness and rural calm. There is a grill which we used for ribs and a lovely garden with the largest calla lilies I have ever seen! But, I would be completely remiss if I didn't mention probably one of the most wonderful aspects and special touches that makes this place so wonderful...the smell of the linens is SPECTACULAR! I know, weird right?! Not at all. My favorite part of every day was wrapping myself up in those incredibly soft towels and robe in the morning and stepping out of the tub at night. I even asked about what Karen uses and I bought a bunch of it upon arrival back in Chicago.

Karen had also prepared a bag of suggested places to visit based upon what we told her we were coming out to see. There were several coupons for free or discounted tastings at the big name wineries as well as suggestion for local fare. We went with “Ace In the Hole” for excellent cider and live music and the winery maps to calculate our adventures by the day.

I honestly cannot say enough about this place and I feel like I've said too much. My partner and I have not had a real vacation in 10 years. This was our postponed honeymoon almost 4 years after getting married. We waited because of finances and the Windrose was so affordable and came with so much, it was worth every dime...and then some. We have been denied reservations at B&B's as two men and that has been humiliating and probably adds to the anxiety of travelling for us. There was not an ounce of hesitation in Karen's voice when we inquired with her about being a gay couple. She even made sure to tell us to drive safely as we headed out, surely like any good mom would do. I don't know how I could convey my gratitude for their hospitality sufficiently enough. I would never stay anywhere else.

I first want to comment on our previous guests receiving a complimentary bottle of wine. We are no longer able to give a bottle of wine to our guests according to the ABC (alcohol beverage control),

Thank you for the great review. I hope you will come back sometime, and have another Windrose experience. Hope all is well with you both.

Cheers,
Karen
