My husband and I needed a few days to relax and get away, and we hit the jackpot when a friend recommended the Windrose cottages. The property is tucked away amidst the farm land just a mile or two outside of Windsor, and what a perfect spot to rest and unwind. The brahman cattle, emus, ducks and canada geese in the surrounding pasture added just the right touch to make us feel like we were way out in the country, but it was just a quick hop into Windsor, or up to Healdsburg.
Karen and Byron are outstanding hosts, who go to great lengths to make sure their guests have everything they need for the perfect stay. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the dishes and utensils you'll need, right down to the salt and pepper, and saran wrap and foil. There was cereal, fruit and cheese, bread sticks, a loaf of delicious berry and nut bread, fruit juices and milk, and all the fixin's for waffles in the morning.
The entire place was immaculate, the bed was comfortable, and the towels and robes smelled fantastic. We stayed in the French Garden Cottage, and the patio with a nice big jacuzzi was the highlight of the 3 day/2 night stay. Though there are winetasting and dining experiences galore in the area, we headed out for Big John's Market in Healdsburg, and brought back enough fresh food to allow us to stay put in our comfy cottage for the duration, except for a beautiful drive up the Russian River, and a stop in Bodega Bay for some clam chowder.
As for one review complaining about having people coming to visit, we very much appreciated the fact that this place is made for a quiet, romantic get-away. We liked being able to leave the doors and windows open, wander around in our bathrobes, and feel like we had the place to ourselves. They let you know when you reserve a cottage that that's the way it is, and it's one of the reasons this place is so special. If you need anything, Karen and Byron are right there to see to your needs, but most everything you could possibly need is provided right there in your room. If you don't, you are left to your peace and quiet, without the noise of housekeeping and ice machines, and kids running in hallways.
We will definitely be back, and maybe this time we'll do some winetasting, and we will certainly stay longer. Two nights was not long enough.
