Coming to the States from Australia, it's almost certain that LA will feature in travel plans at some stage. In this case, we had travelled primarily around the East Coast, but to finish off the trip we were taking a Disney Cruise from LA down to the Mexican Riviera. We just needed somewhere to stay before we headed off, and so we flew from New York to LA and then, after a bit of online research, spent two nights at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood.
All of a sudden, any previous (snobby) reservations we may have had about LA, and Hollywood, disappeared.
This hotel is the quintessential Hollywood hotel. It has a connection to the past glories of Hollywood, and is also rooted firmly in its present.
The service was fantastic as soon as we arrived, with the staff virtually forcing me to relax and take a holiday, while they sorted everything out for us.
Then, within 10 minutes of checking in, we were lounging by the pool, enjoying the expansive view of LA (as the hotel is quite high up), having a couple of drinks and some delicious snacks, while the kids had a ball just playing around the nicely warmed pool. A pretty big difference to New York in late November!
So first impressions probably skewed our experience somewhat (for the better).
Our room was nice and large - five of us (2 adults and 3 kids aged 7, 5 and 3) staying in a room with two Queen beds, but there was effectively a separate area with a TV, couches and fridge, etc, that was far enough away that we parents could watch TV and read (or pop down to the bar and bring back a cocktail) while the kids were sleeping. The staff offered to provide us with a foldaway bed, but the kids were fine with sharing so we made do (the room could have fit one, though). Great views and very classy throughout.
The bars downstairs and restaurant were brilliant, and the staff were wonderful.
Location-wise, it's right in the thick of things on Sunset. We walked to Hollywood Boulevard our first morning, partly just to get out and about but also because it only took us a little over half an hour, kids in tow, and it was nice to be in the sun! Some parts when walking Sunset seemed a little dodgy, but we noticed later that night that funky nightspots that look great at night-time, all neon-lit, don't quite match up during the day. There are some bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity, including the Saddle Ranch Chop House across the road, which was fun. I found out after our stay that the Whisky A Go Go (along with the Viper Room and the Roxy, among other famous LA cultural landmarks) was less than a mile to the west along Sunset - had I known I would have definitely wandered down there to take a peek and have a drink(s).
And, of course, the hotel itself is an art deco wonder, as well as having been the former abode of such Hollywood icons as John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe and Tasmanian Errol Flynn.
Overall, a hotel that not just added to our experience of LA, but made it quite extraordinary.
