“Mixed feelings...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011 via mobile

I wanted to give The Pepper Tree a higher review, I really did, but I
have mixed feelings about my experience.

Let's start with the positive. The location of the motel is great. (It is NOT a bed and breakfast). It is centrally located within walking distance from shops and restaurants. We were located on the sixth floor and we had a killer view!
Now the not so positive. I reserved the "romance package." When I booked the room, I was told it would be a total of $300.00 INCLUDING taxes. When I arrived, it was $21.70 higher than I expected and when I questioned the additional charge, I was told that it was the tax which had NOT been included in the original $300.00. The "package" included a room with a king sized bed with a jacuzzi tub for two, a bottle of wine, a $60.00 gift certificate to a local restaurant called "Jake's on the Lake" and a box of chocolate truffles. The wine was Pacific Peak wine and although I thought it tasted ok, my love didn't care for it. We looked it up on-line and we found that it sold for around $2.69 a bottle. The truffles, although delicious, came in a tiny box of four. The room was small, the bed was moderately comfortable, but the jacuzzi tub and shower were great. The food at Jake's on the Lake was horrible, however. (Might I suggest that the management give out gift certificates to another local restaurant called Dockside 700- the food there was delicious)!
When I checked out and received a break down of the charges, in addition to the room ($238.70), I discovered I was charged $9.00 for the wine, $2.00 for the wine glasses, $60.00 for the "gift" certificate, and $12.00 for the chocolates. Had I known that when I booked the room, I would have
declined the "package" and reserved the room only.
My advice-ask for a breakdown of charges when you make your reservations or don't book the package; it wasn't worth it.

Response

Dear Lee & Marika,

After reading your comments about my review, I felt compelled to respond.
Had you read my original review carefully, I indicated that AT THE TIME I booked my reservation I specifically asked if the $300.00 included taxes and I was told that it did.
Regarding your comment about me not mentioning how the horrible food was at Jake's to someone at the restaurant, you are assuming that I didn't.
Again, had you read my review carefully, you would see that I did not give your hotel a poor review.  I tried to be as neutral, fair, and honest as possible and even mentioned the positive experiences of my stay at your motel.   It was my choice not to say anything to Marika when I checked out because I chose the option of writing a review on trip advisor.  I am not asking for a refund.  I am not bad mouthing your establishment.
I am choosing not to stay at your motel again.

“Great Location and Amenities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

We had a room on the 4th floor. The amenities in the room and at the hotel are great. In the room, we had 2 robes, coffee grinder, microwave, fridge and a spa tub in the bathroom. Even the bath products are nice. The breakfast had a lot of options and was tasty. I feel the front desk man at check in was not that friendly and a little awkward. On Sunday, we called the front desk to ask for an hour later check out and the front desk lady gave it to us. However, 30 minutes later a man knocked on our door telling us we had to check out. I told him we were given a later check out. This was also awkward. It doesn't seem the front desk and other workers communicate. Overall, I recommend this hotel and would stay again because of the amenities and the location.

“Great location and view, but room only average and blanket was stained”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

We were on the sixth floor but there's an elevator so no problem there. The view of the Lake was great and the breakfast was pretty good. The place does not have air con (it was in the high 70s) so we had to use a fan. There was quite a bit of noise from Bikers gathering outside the hotel around midnight, but not the hotel's fault. We noticed in the morning that the underblanket was badly stained (milk?) and we were not happy! I told the lady behind the desk so that the next people in the room wouldn't be faced with it. Consequently I could not recommend it.

Hi there Jaguar7777- Thank you for taking the time to write an honest review. It sounds like (all-in-all) you were pleased with your stay. Your honest comments allow us to pay attention to details often missed. Marika and I "police" our Housekeeper's on a regular basis to make sure the standard set by the Owner & ourselves is maintained. I am so sorry you found a milk-stain on the mattress pad. That has since been replaced and we thank you for bringing it to our attention. Air conditioning in Lake Tahoe, as you can imagine is rare because we enjoy such mild and dry summers. About the noise, we do what we can with the surrounding businesses to keep it under control and apologize for any inconvenience you may have suffered. We hope you will stay with us again, when you next visit Lake Tahoe. You can now enjoy our recent digital TV upgrade AND the addition of 3- HBO Movie Channels! All the Best- Lee & Marika

“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

Stayed at a dive in So. Lake Tahoe for top dollar but came across Pepper Tree in the next night. The terrific lady at the desk could not have been more friendly. I only hope I have her name right.... believe it was Karen. She gave us a room with a great view of the lake. Room was comfortable and very clean. Never heard any other guests. The next morning we asked if they had availabilty for another night as we loved it. Our room was already reserved but Karen and her husband (just as friendly) found us a spot one floor higher with that great view. We did not use the pool but it looked very clean. Great breakfast bar with wonderful coffee. Did not need our car to get around the town, everything within walking distance. I walked to the park and took pics of the sunrise. Would never go back to south side of Lake Tahoe.

Hi Kandlmartin- We are Marika & Lee (the Innkeepers) and deeply appreciate that you took the time to write such a wonderful review. We are still fighting the image left by the old management. Many people are surprised at the differences between North & South Lake Tahoe. We have learned that Tahoe City is much less commercial and far more quaint. We ofetn have guests leave to drive to the South and return before the end of the day to the North Lake. Come back soon and enjoy our latest upgrade ! We now have 51 digital channels including 3- HBO Movie Channels. Again, another examlpe of "our guests have talked- and we have listened." We are constantly striving to improve and upgrade the Pepper Tree Inn- THANKS !

“Incredible view and location. Room satisfactory.”

Waking distance to numerous yummy restaurants, cute shops and the beautiful beach/ park. We were able to park our Harleys in the covered garage. Rooms were clean, average and comfortable.
