When Tony Bennett crooned “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”, I’m thinking that the only reason he could have left this beautiful city was his experience at Embassy Suites on Gateway Boulevard near SFO in South San Francisco. My stay there during a recent business trip was perhaps the worst experience I’ve ever had at a hotel.
I had requested a non-smoking room but, as I entered the suite, I was overwhelmed with the smell of old cigarette smoke as if someone had just held a “smokers only” poker tournament. I thought to myself: “Maybe the hotel had given me a smoking room by mistake?” Nope. There, on the dresser, was a sign admonishing guests that they would be charged a $150 fee if they smoked in the room.
Those of you familiar with the Embassy Suites chain know that each suite consists of two rooms. On the website for this Embassy Suites’ property, the following claim appears: “You’ll find a TV in each room for your viewing pleasure.” When I arrived for my stay, sure enough, there were two television sets. Problem was, neither worked. Now, for the record, I haven’t been without a TV set available since about 1957, so I wondered how I would deal with the quiet room without my accustomed background noise. After all, one might understand if one TV didn’t work, but both? When I called the front desk to ask to have someone fix the problem, the clerk told me that the engineer wasn’t there.
Exasperated, and experiencing severe TV withdrawal symptoms, I said to myself: “Maybe I’ll just sit back and brew a cup of coffee.” That didn’t work so well either. When I pressed the start button on the in-room coffee maker, the coffee came out okay, but only half in the cup. The rest dripped out the sides.
Finally, I decided to get some much needed sleep, but even the bedroom door didn’t function. It wouldn’t close all the way.
Overall, the room I was given and the public areas in the hotel are in severe need of updating. After many years of staying at Embassy Suites, this place was astoundingly disappointing. Following the “hotel accommodations” tab on the property website, one will find this quote at the top of the webpage: "Our accommodations provide a consistent, quality environment ... to meet your needs and expectations." To Embassy Suites: “You’re kidding, right?” To my fellow travelers: “Skip this hotel. Find a Motel 6 if you must, but don’t stay here.”
Room Tip: If you really, really must stay at this hotel, be sure to check out the room you're getting BEFO...
