Bissell House is a lovely point of departure for exploration of the Los Angeles/west San Gabriel Valley. Within walking distance of village-like South Pasadena's downtown, the location is hard to beat. The restaurants on Mission Street and nearby neighborhoods have some great food; try Firefly, Gus's, and a sundae at the Pharmacy (share the sundae or skip dinner). The exterior of the house and its neighborhood take you to the elegance of the late 1890's. We've used Bissell House many times as an escape from our very different niche of SoCal. Thus, we were a bit surprised to see how much it had changed with the replacement of its longtime innkeeper.
The breakfasts were good, but not spectacular: for example, despite the height of blueberry season in California, we had unfresh blueberries (frozen). The coffee was weak and unappealing.
We didn't mind the chipped paint on the doors of the rooms, but the saggy mattress was another matter.
Every request for information and help was generously answered, but one gets the feeling that the current owners and staff don't quite have it together. When we asked to pay when checking out, we were first told that our credit card had already been charged. When we assured the staff that we had only been charged for a single day, it took several minutes to sort things out.
Make no mistake, we will be coming back to Bissell House to give it a 2nd chance, but we might also experiment with one of the other South Pasadena B'n'B's just to see the alternatives.
