My husband gets all the credit for finding this wonderful gem in Inn at Sonoma. For my 50th birthday I wanted an escape from cold Minnesota and so we chose Sonoma as a base from which we could hike a full day in Armstrong State Nature Reserve (giant redwoods—well worth the gorgeous hour and half drive and then all day hike), another day for vineyard hopping (fun and refreshing) and another day to just relax, browse and dine in and out of shops and good restaurants. Sophisticated in a subtle and unpretentious way, Inn at Sonoma (under the umbrella logo A Four Sisters Inn) beckoned us with its calm, comfortable style. Tucked into a peaceful little patch of trees off the main road leading directly into Sonoma’s town square, we at once felt a natural affinity toward it as being “the perfect escape” as we walked up its front steps and into a cozy great room alit with quiet chandeliers, wall sconces and glowing fireplace. A large brass canister brimming with fresh baked cookies greeted us at the door. Peppered about the room beyond are comfortable couches and friendly tables and chairs in which to enjoy the company of fellow guests during both the complimentary afternoon wine and cheese social hour and the lovely breakfast served each morning (certainly NOT the ho-hum fare one would typically expect—considerable thought and pride is infused into every unique and delicious homemade morsel as it quietly and steadily wafts out from the kitchen and on to the buffet table by the cooks themselves.) Our room was just as stately, generous and welcoming as the foyer room—impeccable taste in decoration, yet at the same time encompassing all that is needed for comfort and convenience: a deliciously snuggly bed; a lovely porch patio on which to enjoy complimentary coffee room service; subdued lighting by the fireplace at the foot of the bed where we sipped purchased wine (glasses and corkscrews are provided in the room); smart and direct bedside lighting for curling up later in a plethora of pillows to enjoy a good read. We fell asleep looking out on a full moon lit sky from the all-glass double doors. Front desk and room service was consistently gracious, professional and prompt. All guests were respectfully considerate and quiet in the hallways and guest room areas, yet congenial and conversational in the great room where everyone enjoyed telling of their day’s adventures over a glass (or two…) of wine. We never heard noise from the road or parking lot because everything in town is within a few minute’s walk (no one seems to need a car once it has been parked, and complimentary bicycles are available at the inn as well). Restaurants are many, and excellent. We recommend Della Santina for dinner— local crowd, upscale but not too expensive, an astute staff and a deliciously unique menu (one block off main town square) and Basque Boulangerie Café (amazing array of bread and pastries) for that “fill your picnic basket” stop. The best place for everything else, however— escape, respite, breakfast and friendly afternoon gatherings— hands down, is Inn at Sonoma. We do not feel the need to “try another place out” when we visit Sonoma again. It truly is the perfect place to escape to and celebrate something wonderful.
Room Tip: I don't feel you could go wrong with any of the rooms. The front rooms are close to the parking...
