“Beautiful Sonoma”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Absolutely fabulous belated honeymoon, nice welcome at check in, the complimentary wine tasting a great idea (a little too early for us only managed it twice in two weeks). The spa bathing ritual is great, the massage that i had was soooo relaxing. All the staff always polite at all times. A big thanks to Deborah on concierge desk for helping us plan a few days out while missing the most touristy bits (which is what we wanted) and arranging western horse riding which was fantastic. The rooms were roomy and were cleaned and made up every day by lovely domestic cleaners. The hotel itself has a rustic charm to it ( I personally think redecoration would spoil the charm of this beautiful hotel, it is after all by American history quite old!!!) Big 3 was closed for the first part of our holiday but after the reopening we used it about 4 or 5 times and was nice food and good value for money. I think the only downside to this hotel is the prices at the bar and Sante restaurant, the food was nice but not much of it therefore making it poor value for money (perhaps that is what you get at michelin star restaurants but please put a little veg with the steak) Overall we thought that the hotel was great and if i can bring myself to do another 10.5 hour flight followed by and 1.5 hour drive I will definitely be back. Sonoma itself was beautiful we stayed last week in January , first week February 2012 and had great weather. Thank you again to all the staff at the Fairmont for my fantastic belated honeymoon.

Room Tip: We stayed in the lowest priced rooms, facing the main entrance and were quite happy

“Older property but nice experience”

From the outside it is somewhat rustic, lush with a beautiful lobby area. Fairmont staff are wonderful, no complaints there. We had one dinner in the hotel and everything was wonderful. The price was extremely fair so hard to complain. We were hear for an association board meeting so I will say the meeting room and food were wonderful as was the service. I would stay here again but the rooms are not absolutely great. You may have a walk and a flight of stairs outside or a small elevator. It is not exactly in a scenic area of Sonoma but I think that is secondary as well. It was a great value. The only other property I have stayed at in this area is the Sheraton in Petaluma which is definitely newer but the Fairmont is charming. You are about 10 minutes away from the Square in the City of Sonoma. Great restaurants and bars. Went to Audellsa, Kunde and Deerfield Ranch wineries.

Room Tip: Try to get the newer wing

“Perfection!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We had a girl's weekend getaway and enjoyed ourselves very much. The atmosphere and the people really made our stay wonderful. Judy the Concierge could not have been more helpful.

The lobby is dark and warm with comfortable seating and a huge fireplace. The spa is fantastic with a bathing ritual and sauna that will be missed now that I'm back home.We went to complimentary yoga class too.

Our room #274 is perfect! Large room with a fireplace and a balcony that faces the front of the property. Someone delivers bags of firewood each day. There is evening turndown service too.

Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: You must get a larger room with a fireplace. It's worth it!

“Could've done with a little more chic and much less shabby.”

I have to say this is the first time I've ever written such a poor review. However, I am just so fully disappointed in our experience that I feel the need to share it with you.

This hotel and spa is overpriced and has very poor service.

Check-in was uneventful. We had reserved two rooms online several months prior, and paid full price. Throughout both nights nobody in my party was able to receive restful sleep due to the hard mattresses, and lack of insulation between floors or walls. I felt like we were competing between the noises of the lobby, slamming doors, and the people upstairs who walked around, seemingly all night. I know there's nothing you can do about the insulation and the way the hotel was built. However, for the amount of money we were paying to stay I was very disappointed feeling as if I was staying in a hostel or poorly made apartment. I also had trouble believing that the photos we had viewed online were even part of the same hotel. The rooms were depicted MUCH roomier than they actually were. Also, the window in the bathroom was permanently stuck open a crack, making for a very cold shower.

The spa was also a disappointment. It was overcrowded to the point of having no seats available to wait for your treatment. I received the ginger soak, which was lovely, the technician was professional and polite. However the small room with the ritual bathing was swarming with people. It was not quiet, and certainly not relaxing. You felt like you were in a bathtub with 10 strangers. I also felt like I was part of a cattle call. On top of it all the cleaning folks kept coming through the waiting area with a large rolling bin of towels. You could hear it in the room, while trying to relax rolling over the tiles, and politely asking people to move out of the way so they could fit through the tight quarters.

Our total bill was over $1000 per room. I had expected to pay that amount up front, I have no problem paying for exceptional service. I do not believe any of the service we received to be exceptional, or even good. Upon checking out I attempted to raise the concerns we had to the front desk. The response was 'Awww, I'm sorry".

The pros of the weekend revolved around the Big 3 restaurant, lovely service and wonderful food. The wine tasting in the lobby was also very nice, along with the cheeses that were offered. The shampoo and conditioner in the bathrooms were nicely scented. The only reason this is getting more than one star.

For the money you could do much better in Sonoma or Calistoga
