“Lacks all the meaning of a B & B”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2010

I found this place to be rather amusing and question the reason why this woman decided to become an inn keeper. I like to stay at B & B's for the hospitality and warm social environment they offer. This place left me feeling like she just needed to make some extra money off her extra rooms. The photos are quite pretty but in reality the grounds are in disrepair. The landscaping is overgrown and unattended. Our tiny room had no place to sit so while my husband got ready for dinner I decided to go down to the sitting room to see if a glass of wine or lemonade was offered and perhaps visit. The living room was totally dark, empty and quiet....no nice music....no inn keeper to chat with. There I sat alone in the dark quiet. Creepy. On our return from dinner the house was totally shut down with no lights to guide us to our room and no one around. This was before 10:00 p.m. The next morning we were offered a very simple breakfast of slightly burned pancakes and thick hard bacon. Not exactly a treat. We got out as quickly as we could in the morning and certainly won't return again.

“"There's nothing I can do about that."”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2008

We should have known. The first thing we saw on are way upstairs to our room was a pair of kid's underwear hanging on the bannister. We were informed at that moment, that a family of five had rented three of the four rooms. That was our cue to turn around and leave, but we stayed.
Our room was very small. The heat was off and it was quite cold. The towels were frayed and old, the rug in the bathroom was wet. There was no door separating the toilet area from the bed area. A sign on the jacuzzi tub encouraged us to use bath salts/bubbles, but only an empty bottle sat on the shelf. The balcony was miniscule with a view of the service entrance.
The family of five (including two young children) dominated every common space in the house. The children were allowed to run up and down the stairs, shouting very early in the AM. The adults were no better; we had to ask them to lower the TV volume in the kitchen late at night.
At checkout, Kathy, the host, asked about our stay. I told her we had come for quiet and romance , but had found neither (referring to the family). She replied, "There's nothing I can do about that."
We believe that a B&B that touts romance and quiet should not allow children. If they do allow kids, they should warn other guests in advance so we that could seek our peace and quiet elsewhere. At the very least, a host should ensure a comfortable, quiet stay for all guests.

“Not Worth the Money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2008

My father and I arrived late one night, and Kathy was kind enough to take us in when she wasn't expecting any guests. On the plus side, Kathy is a very gracious host and made us feel welcome enough. However, this is the ONLY reason I rate this B and B "2 stars". The accommodations do not measure up to the expensive price($160.00 per room). The drain in the shower was completely backed up, and the water never got very hot. The worst, though, were the beds...the mattresses are obviously ancient and in dire need for replacement. Lumpy, hard, and plain uncomfortable. The sheets felt funky; they were damp and used too many times. They reeked of fabric softener, as though to mask this fact.

Breakfast was OK. Nothing too special, but not bad, either. Basically, I recommend avoiding this place if you're in the mood to relax and be comfortable and not feel like you were totally ripped off.

“Enjoy Paper-Thin Walls?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2007

To put it simply, this place is a great house, but has no real business being a B&B. Our review is based on the many B&Bs we've stayed at.
This place is highly overpriced (we paid $160 + $24 tax for one night). The reasons: It offers no real privacy because the walls are paper thin, the rooms are very small, our room was not heated (November stay) and the breakfast was something we whip up at home on the fly (scrambled eggs, fruit medley, a quarter of a chicken sausage and chocolate chip zucchini bread, which was actually really good). Also, we experienced the additional problem of using the whirlpool tub (advertised as "for two" but truly not the case) which steamed up the entire room (because of the chill in the air) which resulted in everything — including the sheets — feeling wet. So... we had to open the window. Feeling cold and wet led to a horrible night's
sleep for both of us.
Additionally, the power went out sometime before midnight and never came back on, so in the morning we had no running water (which meant no coffee).
On the plus side: The owner is very nice (though I think she could have taken off a little more than $20 for the lack of shower/coffee/toilet flushing in the monring) and we did spend quite a bit of time talking with her in the morning.

Final assessment: We will never stay here again (nor can we
recommend it) because we walked away feeling that we'd spent a small fortune and got very little for that money.

“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2007

Vine Hill Inn was perfect for what we needed. A nice place to stay including nice conversation with Kathy. We started every morning with a very nice breakfast, ready each morning at the time we requested it. We toured wine country each day and came back to a nice bed and quiet place to sleep. Wireless internet helped us keep up with email each morning before breakfast, and at night we were able to watch our favorite shows from our laptop. We felt like this B&B was very reasonably priced, especially when you consider breakfast for 2 each morning.
