My kids and I found ourselves waiting for our apartment, had to put our stuff in storage mid-move and didn't want to impose on friends for a stay that would be indefinite. The cottage we booked canceled at the last minute because their plumbing burst. We needed someplace immediately, last-minute, so a friend booked us into the Days Inn.
At first I was worried because I read reviews that made it sound absolutely awful. I thought we would stay the two nights she booked because everything else in town was booked up, and then move on. Sure enough it wasn't the best neighborhood, and I wouldn't want my kids walking around alone there, but then there are few places where kids are safe walking alone these days. So when I found out it would be three weeks before our apartment was ready, I looked at the alternatives.
The nicer places were still booked up, plus more expensive. The guy who owned the little cottage was not being very quick about fixing his plumbing and nothing else on Air BnB fit our needs. A friend recommended Extended Stay so I tried booking there, only to be promised a suite, and then told they didn't even have any suites.
The people at Days Inn meanwhile were very accommodating and helpful. In view of our stay being a long one, they gave us a good rate on two adjoining rooms. They didn't mind at all that our plans were indefinite and when at long last our apartment was ready, I felt that what started out to be a horrible ordeal had turned into a really pleasant stay, considering. If my health were better I'd have gone camping or traveled around, but for staying put in Santa Rosa, on a budget, Days Inn worked out great.
To the people who have written bad reviews I would say, you need to look at the neighborhood. South Santa Rosa Avenue is not NICE by any means. Next time you book a motel, use google maps to find out if there are x-rated video stores and liquor stores nearby, or nice shops or museums or what. A motel has a hard time being much better than its neighborhood and I will say of Days Inn Santa Rosa that it's Much Nicer than its neighborhood. They're trying hard to make improvements and once they have the fitness facilities back up and running, there will be very little to complain of. Perhaps they'll bring up the tone of the whole neighborhood.
Finally, consider this motel for your large group. While we were there, two large groups visited. On one weekend there was a huge family reunion with family members coming from as far as Europe to join in. They all enjoyed their stay and the management did a great job of setting up a big outdoor banquet for them. They were great neighbors and the cake they left us with was delicious.
The other large group were senior citizens on a bus tour of hundreds of miles. The pancake breakfast was packed to the gills the morning they stayed. They too were pleasant and friendly and did not seem at all put off by the environment.
So you see, negative reviewers, it is possible for many very nice people to have a splendid time at this motel. If you want something higher-tone you'll have to pay more money. This is the Wine Country, after all. Your attitude might play better in Peoria. The senior tours, the family reunions, and my family, will be back to enjoy Days Inn Santa Rosa and we'll be delighted to see the improvements the management has made.
