“Nice OLD place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

Very surpised. I was looking for an economical place as I was just here for business. If you stay in room 405, have a nice view of the ocean.
The staff is wonderful.
The room smelled a bit funny, but could have the window wide open to enjoy the coastal breezes!
If you love old hotels with creaking stairs and wonderful Renaissance art, this is the place! Truly enjoyed my stay here!!
There is a LOT of street noise, but it helped me to get some work done and didn't bother me at all, so if you don't like street noise, don't stay on the West side of the hotel.
Also the stairs are a bit steep, so if this bothers you, take the slow elevator! :o)

Room Tip: As stated above - room 405 - nice view of the ocean. It's a small room - good for a couple or s...

“Cracking hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

We found this place by accident, we hadnt booked anywhere and went into one place that wanted $225 odd for the night plus $25 parking. We weren't that keen but worried we wouldnt find anywhere, turns out they wouldnt accept cash so we moved on. Then we found this hotel and what a find, I walked into the lobby and thought, yep, this will be more than $225! but it wasn't and only $14 parking which I thought was reasonable. It is in such an excellent location and our room was lovely and big and a great feel to the place. Soooo glad we didnt go to that other place. Breakfast was good! muffins, coffee, danishes! Ok, nowhere to eat really but we were happy to go back to our room and eat. I'd defo recommend this hotel and stay again.

“Great value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

I really enjoyed my stay here; I was there for four nights at the start of September. The hotel is a great price considering you are centrally located. The rooms were clean and the staff and very helpful and friendly. Our room was on the second floor, and we found it to be a little noisy being so close to the street. There was a strange smell in the corridors, but thankfully didn’t spread to the rooms. However beside these points, we had a lovely stay and would recommend the hotel. It is a typical city hotel. Again I want to thank the staff for being extremely helpful and they always had a smile.
I suppose I should mention the infamous breakfast! I don’t think it was as bad as some of the comments here. I personally think it was a nice free start to the morning. There wasn’t much room to eat but we took our breakfast back to the room.

“Cracking location, good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

Stayed here for five nights recently. The location is superb - close to everything. The staff are pretty friendly - booked us a Hollywood tour quickly and efficiently.

Our room was on the top floor and although rather dated, was clean and functional. As a base, it worked just fine - especially at the price compared to other hotels in the area.

My only criticisms would be - they charge $10 per day for internet - seems a bit of a rip off. It wouldn't kill them to throw in some wi-fi! Although not in our room, the corridors on our floor smelt BAD almost every day - but no big deal when it's just the corridor you pass through. And finally, I have to mention the famous breakfast! A pretty dire offering of watered down orange juice, long life pastries and that's about it. But to be fair - there isn't really room in the lobby for anything more extensive and for the price of the hotel in that location, you can't expect the earth! There's a great place called Cafe Crepe a 1 min walk away (turn left then left again out of the hotel) which is tasty and reasonable.

All in all though, a good value, pleasant hotel.

Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Angela Rogers, I am the General Manager of the Hotel Carmel.

I want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to leave a review of your stay at the Hotel Carmel, I truly appreciate it.

As the Hotel Carmel does not operate any Food & Beverage facilites, the vast majority of our guests find it very convenient to come to the lobby for a cup of coffee, tea or juice, a muffin, croissiant or a danish, without having to go outside the hotel at 630a.

Our Continental Breakfast is available to all guests, it consist of fresh baked and delivered daily, croissants, assorted danishes and muffins, fresh brewed coffee, orange juice and assorted teas...it is complimentary, a little something extra to show our appreciation to our hotel guests.
The ocean breezes can be a bit overwhelming at times, and unfortunately we have no control in this area when they drift into the hotel.

Thank you again for your comments and we look forward to your staying with us again in the very near future.
