“Too Noisy to Sleep”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

As mentioned by others, the location of this hotel is great, the rooms clean and the bed comfortable, but if you get a room on Ocean Avenue the traffic noise is incredibly loud and goes on all night. We reserved in advance and requested a room in the back, but they assign rooms on a first-come-first-served basis and "save" the worst rooms for those with reservations (a walk-in would never accept one of these rooms). The room we had was not only on Ocean Avenue but also on the corner next to the office so there was noise AND light all night long. We planned to stay 3 nights but checked out after one sleepless night. Both the woman and man at the front desk were polite and checking out early was not a problem -- she clearly had sleep-deprived people check out of this room before!

We had enough time to see Santa Monica anyway (the 3rd street promenade and the pier) and moved to a hotel in Hollywood which saved us a lot of time on buses (we used public transportation for the first 3 days -- it is much easier to see Hollywood and downtown without a car). We liked Santa Monica but would not recommend the Seaview unless you are there in the summer for a beach vacation and get a guarantee for a room in the back.

Room Tip: Arrive early and get a room on the courtyard

“My room was noisy, not dark enough, maybe another would be better?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I stayed one night at the Seaview, but it wasn't a good one. My room, at the Ocean Avenue end of the building, has intermittent noise all night. It wasn't that there was a ton of traffic at 3 a.m., but the traffic was going fast and was therefore loud. As previously mentioned, the windows are too thin to keep out the noise.

Also very thin was the curtain in the front of the room, a flimsy white fabric. So all night the room got light filtered through from the lights outside other rooms. So the room failed in its basic function of facilitating a good night's sleep. It was an austere, but attractive room, no complaints on that score.

I might be willing to try another room, farther away from the street, and see if it was quieter. The Seaview is well located, near the Santa Monica Pier and a short walk to Downtown Santa Monica. It's on a charming pedestrian-only "street" that leads down to the beach. It was cheap, especially for Santa Monica. I didn't use the outdoor deck areas, but they looked appealing, good for people who like to hang out. I thought the staff was adequately responsive, if not exactly gracious.

Room Tip: Stay as far away from Ocean Avenue as possible

“honeymoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

My wife had never stayed in santa monica before. It is one of my favorite places in america, and I have been there a couple times prior to our honeymoon. Each time I stayed in a small, mom and pop hotel right off the beach. They are disappearing rather quickly. Which is a shame, because those hotels are what connect us to the history of Santa Monica and America.

We got into LAX rather late, so the hotel manager had a middle aged surfer dude sleeping in the office with our key. The "moron" (manager's words) gave us the wrong room. So the wife was not excited about the hotel right off the bat. But I reassured her that she would change her mind once i got everything situated in the morning. The manager apologized in the morning and we got our king size bed and room first thing. My wife was amazed at how close we were to the beach. you could see it from the rooftop patio. and the smell of the ocean was invigorating. my wife said that there is a feeling that comes with being so close to the pier.

Yes, the room wasnt the best. But it had recently been "updated" and was comfortable. The price was AWESOME...we spent $100 a night (taxes included) for our 9 night stay. You cant beat that in LA.

And it is centrally located. Venice beach is a short walk down the beach. 3rd street promenade is 2 blocks from the hotel (Same distance to the pier). The greatest thing about it: Two blocks down, before you turn onto the pier is the greatest italian restaurant, BRUNO'S. It is owned and run by bruno. It seats 75 people...and that is PACKED. You do not want to miss BRUNO'S, it will make your vacation.

We are going back in may and plan on staying there again.

Room Tip: it is right on the main road. so you might want a room on the alley

“Noisy nights, get what you pay for.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011 via mobile

Our room backed onto the main road and I found it quite noisy at night. Maybe new windows would keep more noise out as the current ones are just thin slats. Apart from that nice, clean room for a great price. No frills as previously stated by other reviewers. Would stay again though and recommend to others for a short stay.

“What a disappointmet”

Great location, good size room, clean, terrible stay. My room, next to office, had a primitive gas heater that was not properly vented. The room smelled of gas and I was forced to manaully shut it off. This is a real hazard. When I told the person in the office about it the next morning, she shrugged. Why didn't I have the night manager deal with it? He was a somewhat scary dude who shut the shades in the office and went to sleep. Skip this one.
