“pretty good - pretty expensive but would say worth it.....”

happy with our stay. Room was very clean but a little on the small side. Shower ran hot and cold which seemed bizarre for such a posh hotel. Location is pretty awesome right on the beach front. Great bar on the roof which offers a sensational sunset. Very friendly staff although the two qyestions we sked the receptionist to get back to us on, didnt happen. Perhaps she just got busy but answers would have been helpful. valet parking was a bit pricey at $34 per day but having said that we did enjoy being able to get the car in and out quickly when needed. Almost $6 for a tiny Toblerone mini-bar chocolate was a bit of rip off to end the holiday though....perhaps hotels should realise that the money they make on mini bars pales in comparison to the negative image it leave with $300 a night customers!

“Disappointing!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Totally agree with the opinions of GCpurple.

Hotel grossly overrated and overpriced. We had a 1 bed partial ocean view suite(no kitchen) The room had no atmosphere, the bathroom was like that of a hospital and the dim lighting only seemed to add to the gloomy characteristics of the hotel. It was the most depressing hotel room I have ever been in. Because of our room location if you opened curtains to brighten the room, you could be seen from street passerbys, and the traffic noise was intolerable. The location is very good though and for that reason I am awarding it 2 stars.

Rohann on front desk was also very pleasant but in general staff were not knowledgable or helpful at all about nearby attractions, transport or tours.

Bathroom amenities were very scarce and bedroom carpet, sofa etc.. were stained. Their was no sense of cleanliness about the place, but perhaps the grey internal doors and dark furnishings contributed to this. This was one hotel room I did not feel safe in.

Breakfast was dreadful. A late checkout request (for 30 mins) was denied.

This also was the last stop on our US tour and was definitely the let down of our trip. Next time, we will stick with Marriott, Hiltons, Sheratons, Fairmonts etc..

“Great location, but no-frills property”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Excellent location and nice-sized rooms, but for the price you get absolutely no frills.
We picked the hotel specifically because it had in room kitchens which make life so much easier when you have a toddler (milk, snacks etc). The kitchen was beautiful, well-stocked and looked like it had never been used! Thanks for the coffee maker but no coffee or filters in the room? No dish towels? I felt guilty using the snow white hand towels to clean up toddler messes.

Breakfast was decent. Pool area was fabulous. But I guess for the price I expected some more of the little things that make a hotel so special...

“Nice Hotel - noisy rooftop nightclub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We were there on a Friday night and the 6th floor is the top level. Above that is a very noisy nightclub. Be wary of the top floor on a weekend!

The rooms themselves were very nice well appointed and snazzy.

“Great vibe, decor, location but inconsistent, frustrating service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

My family and I (my husband, 19 year old daughter and 18 year old son) stayed two nights in an Ocean View 2 bedroom corner suite in January 2012. We had specifically booked through the Shangri-La's website to have a suite that had one bedroom with a king bed and the second bedroom with two beds. The check-in process was great, quick and our bags were well taken care of by Andrew (perhaps the most competent staff member there). However when shown to our room both bedrooms had king beds. We rung reception and they said there was nothing to be done, that another guest had decided to stay on so the room we requested was unavailable. This was supremely frustrating as we had specifically booked the Shangri-La as a hotel that afforded us the option to have a second bedroom with 2 beds, and as we'd booked direct through their website we really expected our booking to be honored. Due to the location and amazing views from the room we decided to stay and got a rollaway bed. To the hotel's credit we were compensated and received a free breakfast, and they tried to resolve the issue the best they could.
The room itself was great, reasonably well-equipped and the decor suited the Santa Monica vibe well. A few faults, the tiles seemed to be rusting, some light switches didn't work. The rooms lacking in lighting but that obviously fit the vibe of the room! The view was incredible, as was the location, right opposite the beach, close to great restaurants such as the Boa Steakhouse and Houstons (highly recommend!). Also close to Third Street Promenade for shopping.
We dined at the Dining Room twice for breakfast. The first time, the service was really lacking. We ordered 3 cappuccinos but were served lattes. My husband asked for a fruit parfait then some poached eggs. The parfait came and the waiter said his eggs would come after the parfait. The only thing that came was the bill! The eggs never came. Another service issue, we asked the concierge to book for 4 people at a restaurant, when she rang to confirm with us she said she'd booked for 2 people. We rang down to reception to correct this and the woman who had booked was no longer on duty. The staff member who took our call checked with restaurant and it had indeed been booked for 4 people, it was just the confirmation call was wrong. Little things like this were unexpected from a quality hotel like the Shangri-La.
However, in terms of beach and cool L.A. vibe, you really can't beat the Shangri-La. It's a great building, if only the service could be worked on it would be truly first class.
