“Excellent View- Needs TLC.”

My son and his girlfriend purchased a LivingSocial weekend deal for my husband and I. upon check-in- i was really nervous- the office was old and smelly. we receivd the keys to Beach Bungalow #2. The easiest way to schlep your luggage to the rooms is to park on the main street near the Bistro and lug your stuff up those stairs. There is no bell service here.

We walked along this tiny little outdoor corridor to get to our room. It honestly looked like Section 8 housing. Upon entry we found that the room was very, very clean. The floors were linoleum. There was a kitchenette, a daybed and a King bed. the room was large, but the decor was sort of Bates Motel. Lace curtains on the main window, crappy floral curtains on the kitchenette window. The bathroom was clean, however the shower was claustophobically small, and the showerhead was so low I had to crouch to wash my hair.

The view on the balcony was stunning. Not so stunning was the fact that it is a communal balcony. The first morning we were sitting out there drinking coffee, and the loud neighbors to the left of us were laying loud music and smoking pot. The equally loud neighbors to the left of us appeared to be permanently living there, had a large pit bull dog and were begging for smokes from people on the street.

The girl who cleaned our room was the one who apparently lives in the room on the end. The parade of less than awesome people in and out of her room, and their noise level at night was not fabulous.

The other issue is that we could hear everything in both rooms on either side of us. it just seemed to really lack any kind of privacy.

At one point, we needed a plunger, and the guy at the front desk said, "I don't think we have one". Hmm-

Bottom line, great view and location, but don't expect luxury. If you have mobility issues, this would also be a bad choice for you.

“Great location/Hotel needs help”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We stayed for the weekend at this hotel with friends for a Birthday. We did not choose the hotel. They had reserved a block of 6-8 rooms facing Beach St and the beach is across the street. Fantastic location with large rooms. Our room had a full size fridge / microwave / small bar and kitchenette seating. This room had been redone some of the other rooms in the block were not and badly out dated. The hotel is old and shows potential. But at $200.00 and up a night I would not recommend it. Spend a little more and stay at the Sea & Sand.

Room Tip: One of the three balcony rooms is a good choice. #4 on the street / beach side has been redone.

“Huge room and balcony right on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

Really nice motel across the road from the pier in Santa Cruz.Kitchenette was perfectly set up to prepare the fresh swordfish that we bought from the pier fishmonger. Rockette salad and horseradish cream. Yum.
Room was very well appointed, spacious and clean. Breakfast was laid out upstairs on the balcony - perfect!

Room Tip: Ask for seafront apartments with a balcony

“Not what it looks like on line, BEWARE!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

I booked 2 rooms for 3 nights. One was nice, fairly clean, two queen four poster beds and overpriced at $250.00 a night but we thought for our only summer vacation, my husband and I wanted to treat our daughter, grand daugher and son in law to a great time. The second room was horrible and it was exactly the same price $250.00 a night and what a tremendous difference in overall appearance, decor, cleanliness. We immediately walked into an overpowering smell from the gas stove in the kitchenette. The carpet was so soiled, it was disgusting. The bed was sloppily made almost like it had been slept in and thrown the cover over quickly by a child. The bathroom had black gunk around the tiles in the outdated, small bathroom. We called the front desk and they sent their handyman who just shut off the gas on the stove. That's it!!!!
So I said we were not staying in this room and they moved us next door to an identical room, and it was slightly better than the one next door. However upon closer inspection, it was not good either but the place was booked so we had to take this room. We didn't want to go to a different motel/hotel and be separated from our family. This room had cobwebs hanging from the ceilings in the corners and in the kitchenette, the ceiling fan blades were crusted with dust, it appeared that the tile floors had not been cleaned before we occupied the room. I wasn't too sure the ceiling fan wouldn't fall from the ceiling when we turned the fan on, but my husband said not to worry. hmmmm
When the room was "cleaned" before we got there, they did not replace the toilet tissue roll which was over 3/4 gone. (for 2 people, seriously?) And if you are taller than 5 feet tall, you aren't going to like the shower nozzle. I am 5'6" and the nozzle hit my chin. You had to limbo under it to get water to the areas above your shoulders. My husband is 6'1" and he was miserable in it. The mattress was disgusting. One entire side was totally flat and the bed frame was smaller than the mattress so the edges hung off and were not supported by anything. We had to trade sides nightly so that each of us didn't continually suffer from the discomfort. The 2nd day after our room was "cleaned" and stocked with clean towels, they left one set of towels. We had to call the front desk and ask them to bring another set of clean towels for the 2nd person in the room. Shouldn't the help replace the same number of towels that they take dirty ones? From the very beginning, we had problems with our key cards and could not open the door to our room. We had to call hotel staff repeatedly to get it open. The handyman told my husband that the hotel knew about this problem previously but they didn't want to spend the $300+ to fix it. They would just wait until a few other doors had problems, and then they would fix them all at the same time.
And if you have any issues with stairs, DO NOT STAY HERE!!! The rooms are placed on over 4 flights of stairs. There is no elevator and no bell hop service with your luggage.
The views were great. Directly across the street from the beach, between the Boardwalk and the Wharf pier. But the rooms were not good. And while we sat on the balcony outside our room, the hotel staff showed two other separate prospective clients the room we refused and they both declined. And my daughter heard another couple complaining at the front desk about how disappointed they were with the "honeymoon" suite. My daughter joined in the conversation saying my mom was not too happy with the state of our two rooms either. The hotel staff lady was not too happy about that comment in front of these guests, but the truth hurts!
So again, view was great. But not sure the view was worth it for the price and the overall lack of cleanliness.

Room Tip: Don't be fooled by pictures on their advertisement. Overpriced for the old, outdated, uncomfort...

“great accomodations”

My husband and I just returned from a night at the Casa Blanca Inn. Our room #15 was very nice with a beautiful 180 degree view of the bay. Truly very nice room. It had a shared patio with 2 other rooms. The property is under new management so they are still working out all the situations that go with owning a new place. The room had a beautiful fireplace, large big room that could easily accomodate 4 people. It had a kitchen also. The grounds are very nice. The only negative is there is no pool. We did not eat at the restaurant, but we did visit the bar. The service there was not the best, but I am sure in a month or two they will have conquered that hurdle. I would recommend the hotel if you want something close to the boardwalk, close to the pier. Room 15 is the best room in the house for the view. Happy traveling!
