“Best place we stayed in California”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Travelling from the UK, and not knowing California at all, we really struggled to find quality places to stay on our trip from LA to SF. However, the San Ysidro Ranch was a brilliant find and we really loved our 4 nights here. The ranch is not too large to be impersonal and the way the rooms/suites are placed around the property means you do not feel like you are in a usual hotel and have plenty of space and privacy including a small terrace with sun loungers. We loved our room and had delicious breakfasts served there each morning. We ate in the Stonehouse one evening which we really enjoyed. A very beautiful property and good service. We were sad not to find more places like this on our trip.

“Almost, but not perfect”

The cottages are romantic, the fireplace, the splash pool, the terrace, they have all the trimmings. They are carefully maintained, even if it was a couple of years since the major renovation all is still in mint condition.

The garden and the restaurant is on the same level. Food is good, service is attentive and professional. The al fresco dining experience is marvellous.

The reception is unfortunately neither professional nor reliable. Ask them to change a reservation and they will tell you yes but neither cancel the old or make the new. Ask them to get you a simple answer and they will tell you they will ,but they won't. Remind them and it will be the same.

“Beautiful, cozy, relaxing & fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

We went for our third stay at this hotel and it didn't disappoint us. I loved that we didn't really have any plans, so we could spend lots of time relaxing and enjoying this lovely property. The rooms have fireplaces that really warm the rooms and very private patios that are perfect places to read. This visit, we hiked on the mountain trails above the resort, which was great. We had sunny days and great views from the mountain. Dinner at the Stonehouse restaurant was delicious, too! We are sad that they don't serve the delicious lemon curd at breakfast anymore, but otherwise, we had a great visit!

“Beautiful, but the rooms fall short”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

This place is beautiful. The grounds are gorgeous and the smells are amazing. I can't say enough about all the fragrances- lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary. There is no central hotel here, there are lots of little outbuildings. We were in Fig. The room was nice, if a little on the rustic side. The bathroom was underwhelming with a simple tub shower. For the money, I really expected a more "wow" kind of bathroom. There was also a small enclosed porch on the back of the suite with 2 lounge chairs and a table. The hiking trails were great and well marked. The pool area was beautiful. The workout room was small and not that great. But with all the wonderful things to do outdoors, the fitness room really doesn't matter. The Stonehouse restaurant was good, but I didn't love my meal (five-spice tuna). My husband loved his duck two-ways. With all the great restaurants nearby, I'm not sure I'd choose to go to the Stonehouse again. It was very expensive and probably didn't warrant the prices. All-in-all I had a pleasant stay, however I didn't think the ranch or the restaurant were worth the price.

“This is the Garden of Eden”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

We spent our four-night honeymoon at San Ysidro Ranch and it was magical, with stunning weather and landscapes, intense natural beauty, style & romance, with outdoor activities which will please even the most active traveler, or indulgences to please the least active. The unfailingly friendly and solicitous service of the staff made us feel like we we were always among friends at the center of a beautiful universe.

Having read about the understated wealth and beauty of the Montecito and Santa Barbara areas, we were prepared to be impressed and pampered, and the Ranch did not disappoint. But even for those who are not interested in such things, I would recommend the San Ysidro Ranch property as a place of sublime beauty and peace which (IMHO) are attributable to its 200+ year mission heritage. It truly is a unique place that cannot easily be described without actually having experienced it . . .. . . . ..
