“Another great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

Once again I had a wonderful stay over New Years. I hope they don't change the look of the decor or property. I would so much rather they keep the prices the same. I like the nostalgia of the country decor and real key. We were surprised by the sheets being top notch like in the finer hotels. The bed and bathroom were perfectly comfortable. The place is clean and homey. Its on the east beach, and I love watching the sun rise over the ocean! The pool is kept at eighty degrees in the winter time. Great continental breakfast too! Close to Stearns Wharf, shopping, walking and biking, fine dining. I wouldn't change a thing!

Room Tip: Ask for at least a partial ocean view.

Thank you for your recent stay and kind comments. Yes, we have plans to do some major exterior and interior remodeling and upgrades in the near future. No, we have no plans on changing our current "value oceanfront pricing" as compared to the larger neighboring hotels. We will always strive to maintain our "Best Oceanfront" value since our family started running the Inn in 1976. With our current continental breakfast offerings and guest approval we will not be changing this currently but may expand the items after we do our renovations and upgrades if space permits.

“Friendly staff, stellar location and clean comfy room.”

The Cabrillo Inn is a quiet and quaint hotel nestled just a few hundred yards from the beach. We had an issue with the toilet in the room flushing- but Ryan at the front desk made sure the issue was resolved right away. We opted for a standard "partial ocean view", the room was basic with the feel of a grandma's spare room- cozy, outdated but comfortable. The windowless bathroom light is set on a 15 minute timer. Forgetting to reset the timer stepping into the shower, I found myself in complete darkness while fumbling out of the shower searching for the switch. The "free" breakfast does have a great variety of cookies along with sweet & savory pastries. All pastries are cut into thirds onto a large table with an obvious tip basket for the staff. There is a pleasant but omnipresent attendant carefully standing over you while you make your selection. I found the expectation of a tip tacky and a bit rude for a stay that specifies an inclusive continental breakfast. The Cabrillo inn is a clean, freindly and pleasant hotel at a good price and great location. Super comfy beds, quiet heater & nice flat screen TV.

Thank you for your recent stay and comments. Yes our Oceanfront "East Beach" location is un-matched along Santa Barbara's beachfront. We use 15 minute timer switches in the bathrooms to both conserve energy and extend the life of the fans and or the heat lights. We do cut some continental breakfast items into pieces such as our well received Spinach, Ham or Jalapeno croissants so that guests can see what type of item it is. We also cut some other items due to the "Grande" size we order. If a guest likes any item they are welcome to come back for more! Our continental breakfast attendants are there to assist you with any microwaving or toasting requests you may have since these machines are located in our back preparation room. They also are there to may sure that the utensils are used for selecting items. The tip jar was never allowed and has been removed thanks to comments such as yours. Sometimes employees make inappropriate decisions without discussing them with management. Guests can always tip but tipping is not necessary for the continental breakfast and yes is included in the room rate. Our staff will always go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable, relaxing and memorable as possible.

“Million dollar view at a low price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2011

We stayed at the Cabrillo In the week before Christmas. One of their winter specials was to rent 2 nights and get the 3rd free. We opted for a room with a full ocean view for a few dollars more and it was so worth it.
The room with King bed was spacious, clean, fresh smelling, and quiet. Our only complaint was an outdated TV with a less than average picture quality. But really, we were too busy to watch much TV anyway.
This has got to be the best bargain in Santa Barbara for the ocean front. It is also very close to Stearns wharf and downtown.

Room Tip: Opt for room with a view.

“Great Value 100 yards from the sand!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

My wife and I just came home from a 3 night stay at this great little motel. It is about 100 yards to the sandy beach, and the grounds of the place are meticulous. The staff was extremely helpful. Just a great experience.
We stayed at a partial ocean view room, but it turned out that we had a full view through the sliding glass door. Works for me. There ARE rooms on the second and third floors that have plate glass windows, and that's probably why they called ours partial view.
The pool was kept up well. The morning continental breakfast was pretty generous. It included instant oatmeal if you wanted that.
Plenty of parking, with about 20 spaces under a car port.
The only noise was the crashing of the waves...but I like that kind of noise at night.
The room was clean and functional, but not what I'd call modern. Reminded me of a 60s or 70s motel. I'm afraid if they remodeled the price would go up, and it wouldn't be worth it to me.
Great value, and I hope to return again sometime.

Room Tip: I thought that room 227 was perfect. Closest room to the beach, and right next to the limited outsi...

Thank you for your recent response from your November 2011 stay. Yes you are correct that we are only steps away from beautiful "East Beach" and that your room on the ground floor does have a great view of the ocean and channel islands at the Partial Ocean View rate which is $30 lower than the Full Ocean View rate for rooms on the second floor. The new Ocean View Garden Terrace area where your room overlooked is where our non-heated pool used to be. We filled it in and did a complete renovation with new walkways, brick terrace areas and landscaping. Our heated pool was recently upgraded with a complete renovation for both functional, aesthetic and county code issues. Our continental breakfast in our Ocean View Lounge does have many tasty choices such as our well received Ham and Feta Croissants or the Spinach or Ham quiche. We do have major plans to renovate the interior of our room in the future but have no plans on raising our rates to the level that the large adjacent hotels can command. We will always be the "Best Oceanfront Value" regardless of our property improvements. When you visit us again request a Partial Ocean view room on the ground floor with a semi private terrace area complete with table and chairs for enjoying the spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and our lush gardens.

Thank you for your recent comments concerning your stay with us. We always appreciate customer comments and will always try to resolve issues or complaints if brought to our attention at the time of your stay.

It has been determine that this review is from a guest who stayed with us for 2 nights over the last weekend. We have no record that these issues where ever brought to our attention either at check in, while here or at check out as we log and respond to all customer issues and complaints in an immediate manner. In response we purchase beds of the highest commercial quality at the time from a reputable manufacturer and are replaced every 7-10 years based on usage. Hotel beds tend to be firmer than residential types due to their commercial nature and use. If the guest would have brought to our attention that the bed in his room was uncomfortable, too hard etc. we would have gladly moved him to another room or made an agreeable adjustment to his account. I personally inspected the bed in this guest’s room and found it to be acceptable. We rotate all beds every quarter as suggested by the manufacturer and found this bed to be in compliance with this quarterly procedure. All of the king size beds in the section of rooms, where this guest stayed are scheduled for replacement by the same company we have used for the last 20 years. In regards to the yellow stain on the toilet paper the guest should have immediately brought this to our attention so we could have assessed this and determined if there was a manufacturing issue with other products in our inventory. A replacement roll would have been issued. In regards to the heater fan "noise" issue, our maintenance person did not receive any complaints from this guest's room over his stay. At this writing I personally went to the room and ran the heater and fan for 15 minutes without any noise issues. If we would have been informed of this apparent noise issue we would have inspected and replaced the heater if necessary. Occasionally guests do bang the wall mounted heaters with their luggage or other objects and this may bend parts and create noise from the fan blades which is easily fixed.

It’s a shame that this guest thinks our continental breakfast "looks worse than the soup kitchen" when we constantly receive positive comments from our happy morning guests. We serve tasty fresh baked delights such as Spinach, Ham or Turkey Cheese Croissants, a variety of Danish, muffins, flavored bagels with many types of cream cheeses, regular, multigrain, wheat and flavored breads such as blueberry, pumpkin or lemon raspberry, plain and multigrain English muffins, apple turnovers, lemon and chocolate cakes, Spinach, Ham, Broccoli and South Western Egg Quiches, scones, plain and flavored instant oatmeal or cream of wheat with raisons and other tasty seasonal items. We also serve regular and French roast coffee, various teas, hot chocolate, and juices such as: orange, passion/orange/guava and strawberry guava. Our continental breakfast clearly is more than a muffin and a cup of coffee. We have extra pillows for customers if requested. Since this guest was on the second floor I am at a loss to comment on what was meant by "floors as thin as peanut brittle” We use a high quality dense sound carpet pad and a high 36 oz. carpet to minimize sound transfer. We do not have a fitness center but we do heat our pool year round at approximately 88 degrees situated in a common style family area with tables, chairs and reclining lounge chairs.

Yes we are located at Santa Barbara's most desirable "East Beach" offering spectacular Ocean and Channel Island Views either from your room, our two second floor sundecks, our lounge or our new Garden Terrace area at a surprisingly affordable rate.
