“Just what I wanted”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

I had guests coming in from out of town (I live in Santa Barbara) and I'm in the process of a re-model so we put them up here. It was so charming. There are bicycles to use, they have a wine social in the evening, it's close to the beach and the host of the B&B was very attentive to the comfort of my friends. They had a wonderful time, I felt they were well cared for - great experience. In fact, if this remodel goes on any longer, I might be staying there!

“Disappointing.”

We missed the apparently popular wine social as we were out sailing, and the inn itself fell short of our expectations. The room was very small- just a bed (which was uncomfortable) and a couple of small tables. There is literally nothing to do and nothing near by, and you don't want to sit in your room and look at walls all evening. We did walk several blocks to the Doubletree just to have something to drink. I suppose it would depend on what you are looking for - and if you want to drive around to experience Santa Barbara, and return to a residential area for the night. I can see it would please many travelers, but it was just not right for us.
The breakfast was unimpressive for a B&B, which usually wow you with the breakfast. Also, apparently there are 14 bedrooms, but in 3 different houses - only 4 or 5 in the house which is shown as the "Old Yacht Club Inn", and where we were. Other guests stayed next door and I don't know what those rooms were like.
I think in the future we would prefer being closer to town where you can walk to restaurants, etc., although I admit it would be perfect for some people, and probably more desireable in the summer as it is only a couple blocks to a beach..

Room Tip: The Montrose room was tiny and uncomfortable bed. Don't know about other rooms in other houses.

“Lovely place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011 via mobile

The Inn itself is quite nice. The location is lacking since it is next to two motels (one is Motel 6). Plenty of parking. Breakfast is ok. The room was clean, large and with plenty of storage for clothing. Bed was comfortable. Evening social time furnished time and place to share with other guests and host. We had an enjoyable stay and, in comparison with many other B & B's we have used, it rated higher than average. We stayed in the main house (portifino room) which is more historic and convenient to breakfast and fireplace. It rained a bit during our stay so we could not use the bicycles. We found the proximity of the train not problematic since it only traversed the area occasionally. The inn is quite close to the beach. All in all a good experience.

“Nice Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

Nice place and I would stay there again. They add a nice touch by hosting a nightly wine social from 5 to 6 pm. Nice way to meet other folks that are staying at the B&B. Good time to share information about Santa Barbara.

We stayed in the Santa Rosa Suite....the Suite was clean and neat and although the B&B is older, it seemed to be well maintained. Plenty of parking and they provide bicycles for their guests. There is also accommodations made for glasses, ice etc...if you bring champagne or wine to drink during your stay. The house hosts were accommodating and nice. I would stay there again, it was nicely located to downtown.

Nice review and we would read it again! Our favorite activity with guests is definitely the wine social, a casual hour with snacks and drinks. It's the time when most guests meet one another and the Innkeeper really has time to get personal with guests and give them insight to Santa Barbara's happenings. Guests often find better places to eat by coming to the social since we help guide them in finding a place that is perfect for them. Our Santa Rosa Suite is nice, it sleeps up to 4 people and has all the perks (a fireplace, whirlpool tub and television). The suite will be even better soon, as we plan to remodel it this winter (taking down the old wallpaper and replacing with fresh paint; getting new bed linens; getting a new flat screen television). Thank you and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. Cheers!

“Decent B&B, but slipping around the edges”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

I stayed at this B&B about 12 years ago and it was great! So, when I had to return to Santa Barbara, I looked it up and on the website it appeared as though it was still great!

Unfortunately, things began to slip from there onwards. I never received a confirmation email, despite leaving two phone messages. When I arrived the room I was shown to did not have any outside sitting area, as I had requested (athough the room looked nice). The good news is that the day manager showed me two other rooms that were available and had the space I wanted. She upgraded me to this accommodation, at no extra charge, which was great!

But the room, although spotlessly clean, had seen better days. Little things showed that the owners are running the place on a shoestring. For instance, the caulking in the bathroom was shot. The towels were frayed around the edges. The wallpaper hasn't been changed for at least twenty years, and its age is showing. And the jacuzzi tub must have been one of the originals made in the 1950's! And, in a B&B charging 'off-season rates' of $200/night, you would expect at least a shower cap and decent soap in this day and age!

So, all in all, would I stay there again? Probably not. It's a nice enough place, and convenient for the beach. But the staff is only there part-time, so if you need something, you have to wait until they return! There was coffee available, but if someone else used it in the evening, then the guests in the morning had nothing at all!

With a bit of effort on the owners part, this B&B could be great again - but it really needs some loving care and attention to compete in this era.

Decent review that prompts us to trim up the edges!! Thank you for taking the time to give us some great feedback. I believe you stayed in our Santa Rosa Suite, the next room we plan to refurbish (new wallpaper, linens, and a new tv). We recently switched to a more efficient system for guest confirmations, etc. in order to ensure accurate and timely info... we finally caved to the world of technology, LOL ;) We have also changed our staffing schedule so that an Innkeeper is available more during the day. However, if it is after hours, we are always available by phone and one of our owners lives across the street for any emergencies, maintenance problems, etc. Hopefully this will help future guests know they can always reach us. The coffee is always tricky when someone brews it late at night after we have left. Our staff brews a new pot as soon as they arrive in the morning, but we will figure out a way to improve this setup more. We are sorry you probably won't return, but thank you for staying with us and for giving some helpful tips for both us and future guests. Best wishes during your next visit to Santa Barbara!
