“A lovely, stylish boutique hotel with good service and good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2012 NEW via mobile

In town for one night in Santa Barbara. Choices are- old motels, some run down, some well kept and quite sweet- but still a motel, hotel Santa Barbara ( with no pool), a couple of large full service chains - doubletree, hyatt, four seasons, numerous B and B's and romantic charming inns but few options in the midsize, full service boutique hotel properties. This is why the Canary is such a find. It has a nice restaurant/bar, valet, room service, pool and lovely rooms/bathrooms with everything you need. Service, from valet to room service has been friendly and responsive. It's in a great location- walking distance to State St. There is a gym next door that you have free use of and a lovely day spa one block away. I just came back from there after a massage. I have not used my car since I got here.
Suggestions: there is not nearly enough light in the room. Don't think I could read an actual book in bed. Luckily I brought my iPad. The rooms need small tables to eat at. I am eating at the little writing desk but if my husband were here one of us would be eating on the bed.
Lastly, the room was expensive for what it is - but it is a one night stay over a holiday weekend and in SB - so it's kind of expected. Bottom line- I would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend.

“Very Comfortable Hotel Located in Downtown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2012

My wife and I stayed in a 5th floor superior guest room with 1 king bed for 2 nights. The bed was very comfortable, and the room was quite, despite being located on the corner of two main streets. We were on vacation, and a quite room was important. The hotel was centrally located in-town, very close to State Street, and within walking distance of several great restaurants and shops. The rooftop deck and pool were beautiful, and the service we experienced for both breakfast and afternoon cocktails at the downstairs restaurant/bar was excellent. My only constructive criticism that I could offer would be: (i) the size of my particular guest room (very small, and I would recommend a room category that is bigger); (ii) lighting in my guest room and in the bathroom were not great (more lighting fixtures of higher wattage would help, especially because of the canopy draping the bed and the fact that my room had one small window); and (iii) I did not think the concierge service was great (frankly, I do not even know if there was a concierge, and believe that function may have been performed by the front desk, which was helpful but I did not feel that I received the best advice on area restaurants and attractions).

“They were sweet and moved us.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2012

Our first room was 502 regular room at $395. The motor for the air con was located in the bedroom next to the bed and sounded like being inside a jet plane engine and we could not sleep. BUT we complained and we were moved to a 1 bedroom suite which was VERY nice, quiet and they did not charge us for the difference. They have a nice free wine happy hour in the lobby and the location is GREAT. Might need a little renovation with the aircon units.

Room Tip: Do not get 502

“Lovely hotel - and pets are welcome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2012

My husband and I stayed here on a Monday - Wednesday while work was being done at our house. We stayed in room 506 -- a king premier room -- and it was lovely. Super clean. Very pretty. Comfy bed. Website photos capture the hotel perfectly. As another reviewer recently noted, you can walk barefoot in the rooms they're that clean. And, the window opened allowing us to enjoy the cool coastal air. The location is convenient - one block off State Street and close from the 101.

We had our pug with us and the hotel was very welcoming and accommodating - they even provided a bed and bowls for him. The front desk staff, in particular, were attentive, making it a point to talk to us whenever we returned to the hotel. They also were super about recommending restaurants where we could dine outside with our pet. (Pierre Lafond on State Street was delicious!)

This is the third Kimpton we've stayed in (Seattle & Portland are the others). We've enjoyed our time at each. Kimpton is becoming my go-to hotel when traveling. I recommend Canary highly.

“Wonderful Experience. Love the Rooftop Perch.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2012

My husband and I stayed for a 2 night get-away weekend. The first thing you will notice is the fabulous furnishings and understated elegance of the hotel. The parking is handled by an excellent valet team who were friendly, helpful and professional. We took our dog with us because one of the best parts of this place is the acceptance of pets. There were a few dogs and their owners present that weekend, but all were well behaved. (the pets I mean). Our room was fabulous! It was one of the best beds I've ever slept in. Like floating on a cloud. Since we got in late we ended up near an elevator, but never heard a peep or chirp of anyone. It was very quiet. The size of the room was adequate. It was the 1-bedroom standard size but the bathroom was a bit roomier. I could have stayed in my room all weekend and been perfectly content, but of course we're in Santa Barbara so that's not going to happen. The most wonderful, unique thing about this hotel is the rooftop. There is a pool and lounge area next to a fireplace. The view is killer. We were there during the super moon, and hung out with a glass of wine and our doggy for a few hours that evening. We met another group of travelers who we bonded with right away, and that made it even more fun. There is a lovely bar and restaurant in this hotel but with sooo many restaurant within walking distance we opted to wonder downtown on State which is right around the corner. It was a bit overpriced but we had a perfect experience!

Room Tip: If you tell them you're bringing a pet, they will provide bowls and bed upon request.
