I read lots of reviews before booking this hotel, so we really weren't sure what to expect. I warned my family that it might not be that great of a hotel, but the views would make it worth it. We were really surprised at how much we loved it. Yes, the hotel is very basic and does have a dated look to it, but it is part of the charm. I did lots of research into room rates before booking and this hotel was definitely the least expensive with ocean views, unless we wanted to stay in Moonstoon Beach, which is really nice, but not what I wanted. Also, living in So Calif, I know that $159 for a ocean view room is pretty reasonable. My hubby, 2 daughters and I stayed in room 31 - a first floor, cliff side room, with 2 double beds. View from the room is very cool...didn't love the chain link fence, but totally understand the need for it. The carpet seemed new and the room was clean. We had a fireplace that really warmed the room right up and actually had to turn it down so it wouldn't be too warm (this on a very chilly night). Only bad thing about the room was our TV remote was broken (batteries wouldn't stay in), but that wasn't a big deal. The woman who checked us in was very nice and full of info. She mentioned several times that if we wanted to eat at the restaurant we should make reservations. After checking in, we wandered around the grounds and watched a gorgeous sunset. We decided not to risk a bad, expensive experience at the restaurant, and drove the 17 miles into San Simeon. We ended up eating at San Simeon Cafe and, while almost as expensive as the hotel restaurant ($13 for a quesadilla), the food was really delicious. Hubby and I each had some delicious clam chowder and shared calamari strips, one daughter had the quesadilla - her comment was "I can't understand charging $13 for a quesadilla, but if I could, it would be this one", the other daughter had a grilled ham and cheese. All in all, a really good meal. We did have breakfast at the hotel and it was really good. There weren't many other guests, and our waiter was very nice and prompt. He wasn't overly friendly, but the service and food were both really good. One daugher and I were so very tempted to take the hike down to the cove below the hotel, but it is a really steep trail and I was afraid we wouldn't make it back up. My hubby and other daughter took one look at the trail and said "no way!". We only stayed one night and I was really sad to leave. We all thought it was a great hotel and would definitely stay again!
Room Tip: We booked a first floor, cliff side room. The second floor rooms were $200 more. The view from the...
