“Great location, GREAT price, very comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Doing a Big Sur up and back as I do whenever I get the chance, I decided to stay here instead of farther up the coast to make the trip back to LA easier. It was a good decision, as the highway was closed at Lucia by a rockslide, and we would have had a terrible time getting around it to Big Sur proper.

I wasn't thrilled to be near the Hearst Castle, having been there and done that once. Also not thrilled by the strip of lodgings here, as well as the whole hotel row just south in Cambria. But the price here was good, especially for across the street from the ocean, so I booked it. It was a really good choice: when a friend decided to come along, I changed from a king ocean view to two doubles, for a lower price. Then we were upgraded from that to two queens for the same price, and the room was spacious, with the ocean visible even from a non-ocean view room on the first floor, and actually divided so the beds aren't even visible from each other, sort of a V-shape. Make sure any midnight potty-visitors are on the bathroom side of the V, as it could be annoying for them to come through.

The beds were very comfortable, plenty of pillows and covers. Also plenty of towels and toiletries. Everything was very clean, no bad smells or stains or unidentifiable objects observed. The shower was OK, but the water pressure and temperature seemed kind of variable, and with most of the place empty when we showered it might be really annoying at a busy time. The little fridge was fine for passing through, wish there had been a microwave to reheat my dinner leftovers for breakfast. TV choices were limited, but I don't go to Big Sur to watch TV.

The short walk across the street to the beach was no serious obstacle in January, but I imagine it could be icky in the summer. There is a very poorly marked pedestrian walkway under the bridge about 50 yards north of the lodge entrance. We crossed easily half a dozen times, for a spectacular sunset and in the morning, and had a couple of very nice beach strolls.

I agree with other reviewers that the restaurant is way overpriced. After a look at the menu, we didn't even look in the door. We had dinner at the Sea Chest in Cambria - fabulous - and might have used the 10% discount coupons for breakfast if we didn't have other stuff along.

I will definitely stay here again if my plans include a stop south of Big Sur. There are a couple of places I like in Morro Bay, but this beats them for price and location.

Room Tip: We reserved a two-double room and got a two-queen room for the same price. I originally wanted ocean...

“Great Value!”

My boyfriend and I were used to taking luxurious vacations with our parents, but we just graduated college and were traveling on a more limited budget. We stayed at San Simeon Lodge after touring Hearst Castle and as a part of our trip up PCH. For a grand total of $75, we got an ocean view room. Yes the hotel is older- it smells somewhat musty and the floor is creaky- but it was definitely worth the money. It was clean, the bathroom served its purpose, and the bed was surprisingly comfortable.

“1 night stay”

My husband and I were booked for tours at Hearst Castle! We decided to stay at San Simeon because the price was good and it was only 3 miles from the castle! We got a room with a beautiful view of the ocean! The room itself was clean. It included a flat screen tv, small fridge and a microvave! The bathroom was surprisingly clean but the toilet was baby sized!! I only weigh 120lbs and the still felt like I was going to fall out of the seat! The shower head was build too low, I had to squat to wash my hair! It was probably made for a 4 foot person! The weather was nice and warm during the day so the room
Was nice and warm but at night the temp dropped to 40s and we tried turning the heater on but it didn't work! So we were freezing All night! And the blanket they provide was way too thin to keep us warm! It was as thin as a sheet! At around 8am the heater turned on by itself, which was a little too late because we almost froze at night! Overall, the room was clean, the lodge is in a very convenient location and they have a restaurant on premises! Just make sure you bring a warm blanket for the cold nights!

“Bad Choice of a hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

My wife and I wanted to go to Hearst castle so we chose a nearby motel called San Simeon Lodge. Our room was small. The TV was small and old. Shower looked like a 3' X 3' space.
No room to move freely. Tiles were old and dirty. Soap holder had green discoloration on it.
Hot water flow changed several times and became cold while under the shower. So, I had to quickly turn the knobs. No Tea bags. Sugar packages were so old and effected by the moisture. Everything was old in our room. The room heater was good and manageable. We paid for two nights. The second night we returned to the lodge at 10:55 p.m. and found ourselves locked out. None of our keys worked. I went to the office but was closed. I called the phone number for the emergency 3 times and left VM since I could not get a live person on line. At 11:35 we decided to go to Motel 6 next door and rent a room. The attendant's name was Laura. She was so gentle and gracious that instead of giving us a room, she decided to help us by finding a solution. She called the owner of San Simeon Lodge. One of the owners answered the phone and met us at the Lodge office around 11:50 p.m. Another guy also showed up after the owner opened the door for us. He was supposed to be the emergency guy whom for some reason did not answer our emergency calls. The owner, instead of apologizing, just looked at our receipts and opened the door and said to talk to office manager the next day to sort things out. We found out that they had programmed the keys for one night only. Next day, we asked for refunds but they denied and offered us breakfast. Finally we got half of the room price for second night returned to us. I have never been locked out from my room at any hotel before. This was a bad experience and I do not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Do not know.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

We stay there for one night, just in passing. Everything was fine, except the toliet. It was broken. There is nice place to eat, and the ocean is near... We had great view from our room. The stuff was very friendly and helpful. Overall impression- very good.
