“Basic, ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I didn't have the problems with cleanliness or bugs that other reviewers on this site had. Certainly the room was old and very basic, but the sheets were clean, the shower had plenty of hot water, and it was quiet. That's (almost) all I asked. I stayed here for one night recently, on my way home from a long trip in the tropics, and almost froze. The furnace kept making noises like it was working, but the room stayed frigid. Finally I called the front desk at 2:00 a.m. and was told I had to put the room key card in a slot in the light switch. Hardly intuitive! It did the trick, though. Probably I wouldn't stay here again.

“Bedbugs, Filthy, Bed bugs, Trashy, Bedbugs, Nasty, and Bed bugs”

Bedbugs, Filthy, Bed bugs, Dirty, Bedbugs, Unclean, Bed bugs. A third world experience.

A 60$ nightly rate in San Rafael, Marin County, CA, is an undeniably excellent rate for a single, NONSMOKER motel rate in the SF Bay Area or specifically, my beloved Marin County.

However, the motel staff, while minimally helpful, was "filling in" while the owner/manager was on holiday in India. Yes, yet another (East) Indian owned motel bringing third world sensibilities and filth to the first world U.S. traveler at a sucker nightly rate.

The rooms were filthy. I paid cash for four nights. I stayed in two rooms as the first was nasty and the second was as nasty and both had bedbugs. I used the "Rest Easy (Kills and Repels Bed Bugs)" (from Bed, Bath, and Beyond) to little effect. When the guests in both adjacent rooms vacated, the bed bugs (bedbugs) arrived en mass. The bathroom shower was nasty - grout black with mould and mildew. The carpets were so bad in both rooms barefeet get black in a few steps. How hard can it be to clean the carpets on occasion. The walls all had stains, bits of dried biocrap in the rooms and bathrooms. And it smelled abhorrent; foul.

The Colonial Inn is in San Rafael, Marin County, California. Marin County is the California's wealthiest county (more so than Orange County in SoCally). This Indian-owned filth is the limit and I'm contacting the San Rafael and/or Marin Cojnty Health Dept. to report this.

Room Tip: The few rooms I saw were equally nasty.

“Fail”

This looked good on line so we reserved for a couple of nights. While checking in at the closet-size office, a "colorful" character drinking a beer from a brown paper sack walked in along with his shaggy dog. He looked over my shoulder and assured me that this was a nice place. We weren't so sure, so I requested to see the room. Heavy disinfectant smell. There was human hair on the bedspread and when I pulled back the covers, more hair. I said that we changed our mind would wouldn't be staying here after all. The owner/manager was nice about it and quickly refunded our money. All this happened while the beer drinker and his dog followed us around. Nice dog though.

Room Tip: Cheap room

Colonial inn looks great and comfortable from the outside, but the inside tells a different story. I read previous reviews of this motel and knew what to expect. We were driving into town late and just needed a place to rest our heads Not for the patron who wants to stay in their hotel room all day. Small, outdated, quiet, but absolutely no frills. Stay here when passing through...

We spent one night at this motel after a day sightseeing S.F. and would not recommend it.
The outside was inviting and the location is excellent, located in a quiet spot of San Rafael.

However, everything is very old. Not in a good, charming way.
The inside of the room had a terrible stench. The carpet was so old and gross.
The shower was moldy and the walls and doors probably haven't seen a fresh coat of paint in twenty years. We opened the window to get fresh air and noticed that the screen was torn severely and the window was filthy. In the morning we saw a spider on the ceiling.
We are no tgreat fans of the Motel 6, but we would say if someone is on a budget, odds are Motel 6 is a better place to stay.

The owner of this business must have no respect and regard for his/her customers.

We have stayed at many different hotels, budget to luxury, and this was the worst value for the money ever.
